How're your knees holding up?

Stretching” by Bob Anderson is a great resource. It has short sections with stretches for just about every sport or activity though I doesn’t have a section on stretches for praying.
From the looks of things, it mIght not be a bad idea to include one.

Maybe the author can create a Catholic version?

Stretches for altar servers, stretches for sacristans, stretches for deacons and for priests, stretches reserved for Bishops only…

Monastic stretches, charismatic stretches, traditionalist stretches, Vatican II stretches and so forth.

I think we are on to something… 😃

I’ve been blessed with good knees, so far. My years of work in construction kept me on my knees on bare concrete doing lay-out and installations for hours on end, but now in my 50s, I still have no knee pain. I can kneel in prayer with no problems, but sometimes my lower back, which was damaged over the years, prefers it if I sit or stand. One time, years ago, I developed bursitis in one knee, which my doctor called “priest’s knee,” but thankfully, it was temporary.

If decades of running and multiple bicycle crashes hasn’t hurt my knees then **praying the rosary or kneeling during the consecration sure isn’t going to do any damage. **

Well, it could, but it would be worth it, right?

🙂

I think your knees will be fine as long as you don’t overdue it. It would be better to kneel on something padded - the carpet, a kneeler, etc. I’m getting close to retirement age and my knees are just fine.

This has actually been a wealth of information. Nothing like learning from others who have the experience to look back on. What I’m basically gathering is, it’s not likely to harm you unless you’ve got knee problems. If you detect that it’s starting to affect you, stop, because it will just get worse. Otherwise, proceed as you like.

👍

I have osteoarthritis in my knees. There is something to the old saying “use them or lose them”. If I don’t keep up with exercising, then the muscles surrounding my knees get weak and can’t support my weak knees. Then I also have back problems because my posture has been effected. Stretching and exercising helps a lot to support my bad knees. I can still kneel at the appropriate times. But I can no longer half sit/kneel because the strain is too much on my knees. There are times when I must sit.

Was at a memorial Mass yesterday. A person that I know, in his 90’s, cracked up the crowd in a good way. As a slightly hard of hearing person, he uttered to a friend nearby during a poignant part of the Mass, “If I kneel, I’ll never get up.”

Everyone smiled, and even the family of the deceased thought is was funny.

When I was a young altar boy I had no problem kneeling on the hard marble steps of the altar for nearly the entire Mass, today I can only kneel through the Consecration and that on padded kneelers. Kneeling for a rosary is out of the question, thankfully it isn’t necessary.

Kneeling for me isn’t so much a problem. It can be painful due to a medical condition that I have, but that is only when I kneel for extended periods of time, like when I am weeding the garden.

What is difficult, again due to the same medical condition, is getting up from kneeling. I cannot bear weight on my hands, so getting up from kneeling is almost impossible.
Therefore, I do not kneel.

I’m not so sure about that. Severe problems with one’s knees could cause a loss of livelihood, depending upon one’s occupation. I don’t think it is prudent to continue to kneel in prayer if one has a reasonable belief that such an action is causing significant and long-term damage to one’s joints.

I love to hike, but I sent husband and children off on a hike without me this morning because I didn’t think my knees could handle the hilly terrain. 😦 Still feeling a bit sad, and a bit resentful of these bad knees I seem to have inherited.

Curious. As a younger man of 27, my knees are just fine. But sometimes I wonder if I’m slowly damaging them by, say, praying the Rosary on my knees.

Do you old fogeys still have good knees, even with praying on hard floors? 😉

I’d just like to hear stories so I know if I should “cool it” or if there’s no real cause for concern.

Thanks, and have a good day! 😃
I think your dainty knees will survive, young man.

My husband has more trouble with his knees than I do, and he rarely kneels. Me, I can kneel without pain for up to an hour.

Whether you kneel or not, the hospitals will always be full of “old fogeys” getting knee replacements, or using canes.

In short, whether you coddle yourself or not, it won’t matter. The body breaks down as you age no matter how much you pamper yourself as a young person.

I can kneel, grand and forever if need be and it is comfortable and fine. I do not do it in church any more as getting up is a total embarrassment and a distraction to everyone. They would think I am very pious and holy still kneeling until, everyone has left… same though re getting up from sitting and standing is hard too so thankful not able for church any more… Ageing is fascinating…

You need to change focus is all and enjoy what you want to do else. I have done this many times and mot of the time now am abed knitting and beading rosaries for sales to feed the homeless. Happiness takes many forms.

I am 67 with bad knees. worked construction with heavy lifting most of my life. Add arthritis in both knees so lots of kneeling is hard now. Trust me when I tell you that unfortunately my knee problem isn’t from kneeling to pray.

Just happened on this thread…staying on my knees causes so much discomfort that I can’t focus. I usually lean back and put most of my weight on the pew seat. I have often thought that I should just kneel properly and offer the suffering but I rather like to focus on prayer. 🙂

Hey, who are you calling old fogeys?! Just you wait, your turn’s coming. 😉

I am 63 years old and I like to kneel when I pray. I prefer kneeling because kneeling is a sign of humility to Our Lord Jesus Christ, to Our Blessed Virgin Mary or to the Saints, whoever I am praying to. I have normally kneeled on the kneelers that are padded in the pews in Church. I am a little slower getting down on my knees but I have a rectangular pad that is about 2 inches thick that I kneel on to help my knees feel comfortable. My knees aren’t young anymore so they start hurting and then I hate to admit it but it is hard getting back up. I don’t mind because kneeling while I pray is very important to me. I can not kneel on hard wood floors anymore. Kneeling on carpeted floors is ok but after awhile that starts to hurt and then it takes me a few seconds to get up from kneeling when I’m not in Church. I remember Bette Davis said “Getting old isn’t for sissies”. My husband is 67 and we want to grow old graciously with the love and mercy of God.

Did you know
Tradition describes James, the Lord’s brother (Galatians 1:19) as a man of prayer, which may explain the emphasis on prayer in his letter. It was said that he prayed so much; his knees were as hard as those on a camel – camel knees.

God bless you.

Have you had your knees looked at by an orthopedist? I was having terrible pain in my knees that I could not even drive further than 5 miles without being in excruciating pain. It ended up I had a torn meniscus. I had surgery on Friday and while I probably won’t be kneeling for a while except for the minor pain from swelling, my knee feels 100% better and I don’t have any more back pain. Get it checked out.

Hi, I’m still a spring chicken. I only kneel when I’m at mass and sometimes during prayer at home. Haven’t had any problems. 👍
