This is what I find ironic about people like Hozier and all the “I’m an independent” types. I remember in my first sociology class someone brought up sub-cultures and anti-establishment types. Within these sub-cultures there are rules (though they’ll deny such rules), norms and “do’s and don’ts” – they become the status quo and when someone within that sub-culture, or from outside, questions the norms what then? Interesting. Although I’m referencing here the development of society from the beginning of the sexual revolution and the (parallel) trend of secularization in Western society.

And I think the song epitomizes the zeitgeist today. It’s the climax of secular liberal hegemony.

Perhaps Hozier needs our prayers. There is a lot of bitterness and resentment in the song (some directed at the church, some to his lover). His bitterness and resentment is by no means an individual gripe - Catholics/cultural-catholics in Ireland are still coming to terms with some of the most dreadful child abuse scandals committed by members of clergy and covered up by senior clerics.

Even though the media have had a field day with such scandals, feeding the anti-Catholics and making more of the stories than there actually is, there is still a sense of anger, shock and grief that Irish Catholics are facing from very real abuses of trust.

All of those involved need our prayers, most especially at this time of Lent, for healing and reconciliation - and yes, that includes people like Hozier who have a very wrong idea of the true church.

Yes he needs our prayers. I find it interesting that in our “modern” times where in western cultures you can do whatever you want and as long as it feels good and nobody gets hurt its ok. Yet there has to be some measure of guilt in us when we sin otherwise why do these ppl feel it necessary to try and tear down the Church? Nobody is stopping you from perversion. You need not ever step foot inside another Church as long as you live. Why do you care? Go about your business and worry not.

How come they can’t do it? They must be following their father.

Interesting conjuncture. I was thinking that maybe people like Hozier are afraid of seeing the truth of things, and are making excuses to evade responsibilities.

We should all pray for those who persecute us.

I’m late to the party but that’s only because I barely saw a skit with him on SNL tonight which makes sense because the whole episode was a condemnation of traditional marriage pretty much. Guess I’m not going to be watching sketch comedy anymore-no big loss.

I heard this wretched song while watching a tv show and just the chorus was enough for me. The first thing I thought was: God gives us gifts to unite people and spread love as well as glorify Him. It is like watching the truth being murdered when I see artists intentionally cause strife and division just to get famous. Young kids listen to this stuff and parents are too spineless nowadays to say that a song might not be appropriate which means these types of messages get piped into our kid’s brains. What a way to use a gift!

I had the privilege of recording 3 gospel albums in the 90s and you KNOW when you’re using your gifts the way God intended! When you have strangers blessing you because of how you sang a song that glorified the Lord, you know that you brought joy into a person’s life. On the contrary it probably gives no real joy to a musician who knows they are planting seeds of hate.

He said in an interview that he relishes the hate mail and his goal is to be condemned by the Catholic Church. Wow, what high aspirations from someone who wrote this hate filled record in their parent’s basement-they must be so darned proud.

Sorry but seeing my faith get attacked by people who know nothing of it is getting old. At least people could try to actually know what it is they’re hating but I guess that takes too much courage and who has the stomach for that anymore.

Does Richard Dawkins relish in hate mail I wonder? Because if he doesn’t, then we could safely say that Hozier’s insane. Heck even Madonna and Sinead O’Conner don’t have such aspirations.
 
I doubt he likes the hate mail so much as he just doesn’t care. It’s probably amusing to him. He’s a successful musician. He doesn’t care what people are saying on the Internet.

So would he care if it were hand written letters or by typewriter? Seems to me you just want to say, “He doesn’t care what people on CAF say or the haters say. You sound like fools.”

Girls like girls like boys do … Eh no. Either party of an opposite sex relationship tend to wonder about their future kids will look like if they ever got married. To equate “Loving ones own sex is the same as loving the opposite sex” is laughable stupid.

Interesting enough, according to the music video, it seems the girl who likes the other girl dances a dance that I’ve seen before: Lesbian (let’s us say, for story sake) likes girl who’s dating guy. Guy seems like an arrogant jerk and cold towards girl’s friend (the lesbian). Both girls spend time with each other and it so happens, after the boyfriend, finds out the girlfriend (bisexual) returns feelings to the lesbian he attacks both - physically the lesbian and verbally the girlfriend. It’s basically switching the bigoted father role unto the boyfriend.

Heck, you’ve seen this set-up before but in a different light: Guy likes girl who has an apathetic boyfriend. Guy pines for girl but she just sees him as a friend (or so he thinks) and, while alone together, girl reciprocates feelings. A bit Hollywood-ish, really.

Not much of a surprise the boyfriend is portrayed as he is. It builds the narrative of “sex is irrelevant to romantic love” and “those that disagree are bigots” and “in the end we (love) win” Hey, how many boyfriends find out their girlfriends are bisexuals and find them cheating with a girl and are totally cool with? Not many I bet.

Like Hozier’s Take Me to Church, this video tries real hard to portray non-straights as some sort of victim to physical crime. Well, guess what: Matthew Shepherd case of being a hate was false.
