In Ireland where hozier is from the media ran with this song and he was seen as this great talented performer. Should he have been allowed to mock in the way he did?
 
I remember the thread from last year and I remember reading the lyrics and feeling that while he obviously doesn’t have the best over-all impression of religion, I doubt his intent was to mock it. “Church” seemed more like a metaphor for his somewhat unhealthy and obsessive relationship.
 
This song is referring to a physical relationship — calling it and comparing it to a religious experience.

I liked this song until someone told me what it meant.
 
I never liked the song but after listening to it came to the understanding that it wasn’t particularly offensive. Still don’t like it, though.
 
It’s blasphemous stuff. Not worth our time. The unhappy soul who wrote it needs our prayers. 😦

If it was any other religion it would have been banned but the Catholic Church is always attacked and mocked because people don’t care what they say or if they offend.
 
Thank you to the original poster. I’ve liked this song for some time but never taken the time to find out what it’s about. But now I know.
