I stumbled across this site today. Included are some truly magnificent pictures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

There are a couple dozen pictures, and are worth looking at even if you are not scientifically inclined.

“When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place – What are humans that you are mindful of them…” Psalm 8.

What an enormous fantastic universe God has created.
I’m in awe.

Merry Christmas and have a great 2010!

Thank you, Ricmat! Lovely, lovely, lovely!

Oreo, I would say that these photos are a phenomenally important addition to the philosophy section. It tells me that, since there are already some 400 exoplanets discovered, and that life as we know it on Earth has recently been found to take a remarkable number of forms, not necessarily dependent on sunlight, eg, life around black smokers and microbes deep in the earth, we have some questions to answer.

Since Catholics and other religious groups have a “great commission” to spread the Gospel, and the Church is involved in both science (the pope scope, eg) and, unfortunately, missionaryism, hadn’t it, and the other missionarying faiths better get busy building rockets to spread the word? Since we now know that there are exoplanets, and that it won’t be long before we are likely to discover even Earth-like planets, is the Church remiss in not having some sort of space program, (great idea for a new thread!!) ranging from rockets to studying the possible methods of teleportation or levitation as demonstrated by some saints?

Think of all the work ahead: There are probably more “class M” planets out there than there are people on Earth. So there has to be a mass program for converting the damned to Catholicism and then sending them as missionaries to the new planets as they are discovered.

The benefits will be enormous! As missionaries leave the Earth in droves, the effect of population growth is reduced and the over stressed biosphere has to support less and absorb less of the garbage we are excreting into it and ourselves. The human seed will spread throughout the Universe and we will not have to worry either about immediately impending doom on our planet due to our own extravagant efforts to kill it, nor will we have to be concerned about future cosmic disasters that might destroy our fragile home world. And none of that includes the untold billions of souls that will be save due to our efforts! Think how proud Jesus will be at the success of His work! And think of what will pour into the coffers of the Church!

But the Vatican DOES have a space program! Here’s a short video.

Besides. Haven’t you seen the Babylon 5 episodes with the Catholic Monks?

You should read Privileged Planet, that’s a good book.

And science is a subset of philosophy.
I suppose you could be technical and say that everything is a subset of philosophy in that all human efforts are based on philosophical assumptions, but the application of science is not like philosophy at all. Philosophy is about inferring conclusions based on given premises. Science is about testing the veracity of the premises used in philosophy. Philosophy is logical while science is merely observational. (At least, it’s supposed to be, but quantum mechanics makes it sound a lot like philosophy. LOL)

Detales: Why didn’t I think of it?! 😃

Thanks again! That was hilarious! It reminds me of the statistic that if Jesus has been “Ascending” at speed of light for these last 2000 years, He would not yet have reached even the edge of even our own galaxy, we being roughly 2/3 of the way out from it’s center.

I have scanned Privileged Planet several times, and even read parts of it more closely, but in the end it is a monumental triumph of the human mind’s ability to string things together to make a picture, both by inclusion and omission. In fact, there is a study going on at the moment in New Mexico about why stage magic, or religion works: the brain omits information that is right in front of it because of it’s pre-conceived agenda needs relative to actuality. That book, along with ones on various creationist or atheist perspectives are primarily superficial in their examination of Reality, as they opt for elaborations of what in the last analysis are deteriorations of actual Teaching, even that attributed to Jesus. Well, in the case of those on here, especially to those attributed to Jesus.

Perhaps we need a “science” forum. In the meantime, it looks to me like all the science stuff is going into the philosophy forum. 🙂

Yes, I’ve noticed that. I do wish the moderators would consider making a science forum.
