Hubby's getting laid off AGAIN

There are no companies hiring in MI for my hubby’s trade. We’ve seen some out of state but the pay is far less, and moving away from family and our support system with my health problems would be only a last resort. Anything else he’d apply for would be a starting wage since he’d be starting from the bottom again and there is very little of that even and trust me he has applied for what little is out there.

I can make the money stretch with my income and unemployment -just barely but our health insurance is the absolute scariest thing. I can not be with out it, my heart can tank at anytime -it could be a matter of life and death. To be on a transplant list with no medical insurance - I can’t even think about it. We had a few months left of the government subsidized Cobra left before his job called him back. He did have a much lower paying job for 6 months of his lay off from this job that gave us insurance for a little while -then that company laid him off. I don’t know after the next three months if he’s not called back if we can return to that program or not -I’m not sure how it works. If we have to pay the full Cobra out of pocket we just couldn’t afford it.

I can’t think past tomorrow, I just can’t think it about it because it’s just too scary. I just have to do this one day at a time and pray, pray, pray.

Sorry to hear about it. I know the defense cuts have also hit the sterling heights areas pretty hard. I personally have recieved several lay off notices over the years and have had to move several times to keep a paycheck. While moving to a new area may be a challenge and wages may be lower, the cost of living may be lower as well. You may want to consider looking at prices of equivalent homes in the areas where the jobs are.

By the way, lost my job last spring and took a lesser job. God has always taken care of my basic needs. But as it turns out I may have stumbled into a better job. After all of the layoffs resulting in better opportunities, I started thinking that God puts these road blocks in my way because he has a better plan. I am sure that there is something better out there for you all but you may have to look in new directions to see it.

Make sure to file the umemployment claim. Once you have a claim, there is the possibility of getting extensions. Also, get to a staffing agency(temp) because it is a good way to pick up jobs. I have been unemployed for a quite while. It is tough out there. Pray to St. Joseph. Contact your local St. Vincent de Paul Society because they might be able to help out.

Ditto, I have used these agencies in the past as a way to get working quickly. even though the pay is not always good, it can open doors (temp to perm) and it can give employers an option to try you out in a new skill area with out the risks.

Even if you can afford the supplies, it is crazy what they are demanding. At my sons’ schools, they list name brand stuff and janatorial supplies. we got eight crayons, two pencils and a pad of paper and did just fine.

As a teacher, let me explain why we need these lists. Everyone is on a budget during these difficult times…including the schools. In many cases, if your child doesn’t bring these in, your child’s classroom will do without. (often we have some parents buying extra to compensate for those who don’t, which is REALLY nice and appreciated.)

Can you imagine a third grade classroom during cold and flu season without tissues? without paper towels and/or clorox wipes to clean hard surfaces? without crayons to color with? without glue? Schools cannot afford these anymore.

The problem with moving is that we can’t afford to move. We owe $130k on our house and a house just like ours in our sub sold for $50 last week!

I can understand your distress because I have been laid off. My husband lost his job in April, four days after his birthday. As I am typing this message, I am praying for myself and other teachers to be called back to work. However, it looks grim since it is now 7:50 P.M. I’m still praying and will also add you to my list.

I’m finding my dh’s lay off to be very stressful.

I understand completely wanting your daughter to have nice things, so she would feel confident starting school. I hope she can keep them. I wouldn’t feel guilty at all about those purchases.

Frankly, I do NOT buy what’s on my kids’ supply lists…are you kidding? It’s crazy what they expect these kids (their parents) to spend…I couldn’t believe this year’s lists…we bought them some binders, notebooks, pens and pencils…that’s it. One teacher wanted us to buy a $200 calculator…please.

Get what you can…I will be praying for you guys, rayne.

If your son is taking algebra, the calculator is probably a graphing calculator that he will need to complete his homework in any reasonable time frame! The school will have calculators he can use during class, but I bet he’ll find having something like that at home to be very useful.

If that’s the case though, ask around. Other families may have bought one and now the child is in college and has decided to never take a math class again! The math teacher or PTA folks may be able to give you a lead on where to get a used one.

I can see the pain in your letter. I was laid off for 4 months and then took a job that paid 70% less for four months.

Here are some things to do:

1. Try to go to daily mass
2. Do a Novena
3. Take your income for the last two years. Divide it by 104. That gets you your husbands weekly pay. Divide that by 40 and that gets you what your husband has really made in the last two years per hour. Now ask yourself is he better off taking a job that pays above whatever is x is.
4. Close your eyes for a second think about where you would like to live. Is it on an island, Florida, Carolinas or is it right where you are? Both you and your husband should do the exercise. Start applying for jobs in that area even if it is at home. Apply for jobs that make above the x amount.

Hi, I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I ask that you also pray for me and my family. I lost my job in February of this year, but immediately took on clients as a freelancer and was making almost as much as I did in salary as an employee. Unfortunately, a single client was responsible for about 90% of the income, and I lost them last month.

So…my wife and I have 2 children under 3 at home, and a big mortgage, and car payment, insurance, etc…and right now only meager freelancing income. It is going to be very difficult to make the mortgage payment in 3 weeks. I am very worried.

Hanging in then. I got sick this week (all those lovely public school germs we’re not used to -we all had colds), I missed work on Wednesday because I just had to rest. Now my Crohn’s disease is acting up but I managed to not miss anymore days, surviving with some pain killers. It’s starting to calm down thankfully.

Didn’t need much as far as school supplies thankfully. My mom gave me money to buy my daughter’s homecoming dress (the dance is the beginning of Oct.) so that was nice and my MIL gave us money for her yearbook. ($55 for a yearbook!?) We got a huge phone bill from our phone calls to Europe while my dad and daughter were there -still figuring that out. In hindsight we should have bought phone cards but didn’t think about it.

It’s been kind of a rough day being a “working mom” and things not getting done unless I’m here. Usually my hubby is pretty good about it -so I shouldn’t complain, its just been an off day -and I’m tired and frustrated.
