Neither I nor Bdawg hate anglicans. I dont know about B, but I have noticed a lot of so called anglican “scholars” who are full of it. I know its on both sides of the aisle, but I have seen anglican priests who flat out say stuff along the lines of “Most of the stuff in the Bible is made up, and its childish to believe it”, and write books and stuff with the sole purpose of disproving or degrading Chirstianity. first of all he can say whatever he wants, but when your a priest or bishop and you talk like that thats bs in my view. As for the term “scholar” thats a questionable title nowdays.

Many of the oddball Anglicans you hear about are members of the Episcopal Church USA (ECUSA), though the Church of England has some oddities of it’s own. The rest of us get smeared because of the kooks. Just bear in mind that Anglicanism is a ‘broad church’ movement with plenty of conservative, orthodox Christians who are as appalled as you are at what a relative few experimenters have cooked up in the past 35 or so years within Anglicanism.

The Mormons in this thread have pretty much run the same gamut–some know nothing about Catholicism and seem not particularly interested; others have at least seemingly given the subject a fair hearing.
Alright, I think this is an apt criticism of my posting style. I will try to spend less time being on the defensive and more time asking inquisitive questions to learn more about catholicism.

You wrote up an impressive list of some good mormon sources. I would dumb it down a little, we don’t really want people of other faiths knowing more about us than we do 🙂 . What fun would apologetics be if we had to spend all our time dealing with real issues instead of mere misconceptions?

Is there a similiar list that can be formed in regards to the catholic faith? One that covers history, current beliefs, polemics, showcases some influencial thinkers, and a good encyclopedia to boot. I apologize for getting off topic. Maybe a new thread should be started for this question.

Later,

Hi tkdnick,

Doesn’t the Bible say that God often speaks in a still, small voice? So maybe your expectations about revelation aren’t based on anything more than a sign-seeking heart? And if you want visions and that sort of things, I know several people who have had them. I have had experience with healings and prophecies coming true. But isn’t it easy to pass it all off as wishful thinking and manipulation, just because YOU never got past your initial warm fuzzies?

I say it is you who are shuffling definitions. If God inspires someone by the Holy Spirit to make some change in doctrine or practice, I call it a revelation. “Doctrinal development” describes the symptom, not the process by which it occurs. “Doctrinal development” can happen in any number of ways, but if the Holy Spirit is supposed to be involved, then that development must be catalyzed by… revelation.

Scott Hahn, a notable Catholic Scholar is coming out with a series of high school text books that are supposedly AWESOME! You can get them from Midwest Theological Forum. The series name is Didache. 2 of the books have already come out, 1 is coming out in the next 2 weeks, and the last one will be coming out in a few months. They cover Intro to Catholicism, Church History, Scripture Interpretation, and Moral Theology. Also, you can always just grab a Catechism.

The textbooks can be found here:

Hi flame,

I’m sure you picked it up, but I was joking. I was playing on the fact that I often see Anglicans demonized on Catholic forums, so I thought I would use that to poke fun at how the person I was responding to was dismissing certain scholars because of their religious beliefs, or lack thereof. I actually think quite a lot of traditionalist Anglicans and the scholarship that has come out of that tradition, but you have to admit it’s a mixed bag in the Anglican Communion as a whole. Bishop Spong comes to mind. 😉

But Tmaque, my point was that you had accused me of shuffling definitions to achieve the desired effect. I responded that you seem to be the one using your “own personal definition” for revelation. Which definitions do you think I was twisting?
