Oh my gosh, what a horrible situation to find yourself in. I would recommend a group called ACA - Adult Children of Alcoholics. It is an offshoot of AA, and the meetings are run in the same fashion. You can find the strength within yourself to not feel like you can or have to fix your family. You cannot fix them.
I would also recommend any books by John Bradshaw, especially Homecoming. You mentioned you are seeing a therapist. Does he have experience or training in ACA issues?

As far as the end of life issues…are you actually the executor of the estate, or only the health care decision maker. In California, there is a document called the Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare where you can designate a person to be your decision maker and make your specific wishes known. Part of the instructions state…It is important that you speak to the people you want to appoint to make sure they understand your wishes and agree to accept this responsibility.

I would type up some small statement stating, I am unable to accept responsibility for the end of life decisions for my father., attach it to the copy of whatever he gave you and mail it to him, his doctor, and wherever else this document may have been filed.

Can you make other plans for the holidays…rent a cabin somewhere for an intimate family gathering, a ski holiday, the whole family volunteering at a soup kitchen for the day or something where you will not be available to host the family fest. Just say, we;re sorry, we have made other plans this year.

Our childhoods haunt us. We want so desperately to have the Norman Rockwell holiday dinners. Alcohol steals that from us. You cannot change your father. Continue to pray for him, God does work some incredible miracles. But protect yourself and your family. Choose not to participate.

My prayers are with you. Feel free to PM me.

This is great advice. Also, I would reccomend the book called “Boundaries” by Cloud and Townsend.

Your husband should have known better than to argue with a drunk. Sorry to put it that way, but I know how drunks are. Sounds like Al-anon may help YOU. As for your husband and father let the men handle it.
I agree…let the men handle it. As far as my husband arguing with the drunk, it was completely calculated on his part. He has seen my father come in and verbally attack various members of the family…while we are used to that behavior, we tend to tuck our tails and run…In his mind, right or wrong, the old guy will Never try that with him again.

Apparently he was right, as I just got off the phone with my sister and she told me that my Father is constructing a letter of apology.

Thank you Arlene…I am definately a candidate for Alanon…I’ve seen AA in my area but not Alanon…my mother was the Alchoholic growing up, she had a stroke and the part of her brain that craved alchohol died, miraculously enough, and now in the past 6 years my father has developed the problem…

Thank you to everyone for sound advice. I would love not to feel responsible for my family…they keep me upset, and it is robbing me of the joy that I do own…three beautiful children who are more normal than me, and a wonderful husband

I wrote down the books that Arlene and Princess Abby suggested, since I don’t think we have Alanon meetings in my area…but I’ll investigate that harder too…

And my husband beat him to it and called with an apology…I still have much to think about, but at least this storm has passed.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread, with book suggestions and advice…

Wouldn’t it be GRAND if we could all meet one day? I consider you all friends…

Love, Teresa…AKA Lillith
