Hugh Nibley- Child Abuse?

She isn’t making it up. She honestly believes it. The problem is…she is mentally ill. This is a generally accepted fact, even by those who know her and do NOT like the church.

This isn’t a matter of her being ‘out to get’ either her dad or her faith. It’s a matter of her own mental state, and shouldn’t be used against either Nibley OR her.

As to whether it is possible for something like this to happen…of course it is. Look at the McMartin preschool debacle. I also have a very personal experience with this sort of thing. My cousin is also convinced that her father molested her, and tells several stories about these incidents. As it happens, not only are NONE of the incidents she relates provable, the vast majority of them are impossible. For instance, several of them, she insists, occured at a time when she was in Utah—and her father was in Australia. It was physically impossible for her stories to be true.

It has taken many years, and a great deal of therapy, for her to simply INTELLECTUALLY agree that those things did not happen, but she is still emotionally convinced that they did.

So, m’friend, before you start taking this as gospel truth just because you are looking for things to tar the church with, it would be a good idea to take a good hard look to see if your tar brush actually has…you know, TAR on it.
Wow…if Nibley was not LDS, Diana would be supporting the daughter.

The best defense in these cases is to attack the victim. Diana does that…calling her mentally ill.

Maybe it was the abuse that caused her mental illness, if indeed she has one. I watched an interview of her…she certainly did not appear mentall ill.

I am not saying it happened. I am not saying it did not. I am saying that the denials by the family mean little to me, based on my experience.

But, the types of attacks against her, sure make it seem more likely she told the truth

Exactly the type of ad hominem attacks I was talking about.
You’re right.

It reminds me of the Utah Rep. Garn, that was in a hot tub nude with a 15 y/o girl.

Somehow, it turned out to be her fault, and not his.

Of course, with that case, it didn’t take long for it to come out that she had “issues”.

Never heard of him till now. Wonder if he got in trouble with the church.

I find that disgusting. Anyway, the great Mormon defender is a child molester? Do most LDS deny this accusation?

Do most Mormons hate her?
Tiki, I grow tired of your mudslinging. To be blunt, any Christian, be they Catholic or LDS, must abhor child abuse and take steps to protect the innocent from the abuser.

Asking whether Mormons think she is lying serves no real purpose beyond fanning your fire of RC superiority over LDS. Let’s just all agree that both religions have members and leaders who are clearly not Christ-like.

It is an honest question, which has been answered by LDS apologists as a resounding ‘yes’. Which, has nothing to do with Catholicism.

I was browsing books on amazon and I looked up some ex-Mormon books. I found a book by a Martha Beck. I read she is the daughter of Hugh Nibley. The reviews said she claimed
her dad, Hugh Nibley, sexually molested her.

Wow. I had no idea or never heard this story. When I punch in Fawn Brodie there is a site,
fawnbrodie.com/brodie/ and it takes you to writings by Hugh Nibley. I find that disgusting. Anyway, the great Mormon defender is a child molester? Do most LDS deny
this accusation? I feel sorry for Martha Beck.

Do most Mormons hate her? Like Fawn Brodie, she sounds like a true brave person.

The only Mormon(s) who is in a position to agree or deny would be Hugh Nibley and his daughter, as they would be the only two who would know. Child molestation is unacceptable from any church leader (or any person) from ANY church - Mormons AND Catholics included.ANYONE who does commit this crime should be punished to the fullest extent of the law with the church itself (be it Catholic, Mormon or any other) standing back to let the law do it’s job.

That was pure politics. But, the members did rally around Garn and cheer on the attempt to blame the girl. Even calling Garn’s bribe to silence her a “contract”. And here she is, years later, breaking the “contract”.

Only in Utah would people think like this.

So now we have both Catholic and LDS Apologists defending child abusers, where are you trying to go with this discover?

From what I understand pretty much any sinner can get in trouble with the church (catholic, mormon, baptist whatever) but with appropriate repentance (or sometimes a weak but convincing show of repentance) they can be accepted back…

Who specifically are you referring to? Which Catholic and which LDS apologists?

Only in Utah? Hmmm…I did not realize that it was the only state with “clannish” religious people;)… I think that no state or location is immune to being the home of people like this. Just like no religion is immune to having some members behave completely opposite of what their church teaches and expects of them. Don’t blame Utah; from what I have heard there are some very nice Catholics living there:D

I believe she was referring to his fellow “legislators”.

Although, when I was reading the articles on the Salt Lake Trib site, alot of the posters there were blasing the girl.

Nibley is a famous LDS person, is he not? I was shocked to read about it. That’s why I asked. I don’t care for people who stand up pretending to be all righteous and then do bad things behind peoples back. Nibley is a big LDS person. So I found this shocking. Of course we can find people in the other churches that commit crime. Anyway, if you look
at Hugh Nibley’s response to Fawn Brodie’s book, he begins replying with a sexist line - No, Ma’am, That’s Not History. Guess he had to put that little missy in her place.
