Do you think that if a human were clone, he would have a true soul?

If the clone has a soul, do you think that if somehow some historian discover a lock of Jesus Christ’s hair or dried blood, and he is pretty well sure it is his (hypothetically it is). Would this clone of Jesus Christ; would be the actual true one that died on the cross, or some other soul? Would this clone still be the son of God?

**Jack,

Great question. Allow me to respond as a Molecular Biologist. We are both a biological organism and a human soul composite. That is our nature, and why the resurrection of the body is essential at the end of time.

A clone is essentially the genetic equivalent of an identical twin (Ignoring the different DNA of the organelles in the case of the clone). Were we to clone Jesus, we would get a man who has the same biological features as Jesus. Like the identical twin, he would have a separate soul.

Unlike us, Jesus was both human and divine. The clone would have no share in the divinity. Hope that helps.****

Thom Yorke made an album about the first human clone. That little number is entitled Kid A.

I agree with Gerard Nadal completely. This is actually a pretty easy question, since it already happens in nature. A clone is simply akin to your identical twin, so it should be treated as such.

It is important to point out that the Church teaches that human cloning is a moral evil. While I like and agree with Gerald Nadal’s post, I think the theological issues are a bit more complex. Gerald, I think your explanation, while it does address the question quite forectly and I think your conclusions are correct, it does not address the grave evil of messing around with human reproduction. I think it is important not to lose sight of that.

**rpp,

Sorry for neglecting to mention the incredible moral evil inherent in human cloning. The only thing worse than cloning someone else in the population would be compounding that evil by trying to clone Jesus Himself.

My field, Molecular Biology, has lost its moorings by countenancing IVF and now by gradually embracing human cloning. I am afraid, however, that the genie is out of the bottle now. We can’t legislate this one away. We meed to evangelize. God Bless!!!**
