I know this is something in the future-but my kids had a report on it-we’ve been left with a few questions-
If we were able to clone a person-would that person have a soul? What is the church’s beleif on whether or not this is ethical?

I believe even for cloning that conception is needed. So, if you believe life (getting a soul) begins at conception then sure they get a soul, why not? They are after all still God’s creation, if not by the hand of man. I’m not sure of the ethics, but i’m sure conservative practices would abhor the idea.

i think ive heard that they do have souls but it industrializes the creation process and that is just plain wrong

Cloners are absolutely wrong if they think they can put together a human being by technological manufacture. They can’t produce a human soul. No doctor, no technician, no geneticist can produce a human being alone. If God does not assist with an almighty act of creation, no man can procreate another man. Not even parents give souls to their offspring. Children don’t get hand-me-down souls like they get hand-me-down clothes. Only God can create souls, and He always creates new ones.

Perhaps it would also help to refer to stories of donor conceived people which, whilst it speaks of IVF, I reckon could similarly apply shared circumstances with those cloned.

I can understand gentically manipulating food crops to help feed the world and I can understand genetically manipulating animals for medical purposes to benefit humans but I fail to understand the purpose of cloning humans. What benefit is there from cloning a human??

Yes, all humans, cloned or not, have souls.

Agreed. Humans have attempted to outsmart or go above Him since Adam and Eve. Cloning humans a pretty scary thing to think about too. While I don’t think the cartoon version of sticking somebody in machine and having two of the same come back out is possible, science has become better a manipulating DNA. When it comes to plants, I think it can be good thing(sometimes), but humans, that’s just scary.
