Humanae vitae dissent - is it heresy?

The Church has now clarified that salvation can come from God and through the Church, but without the person being a member of the Church during life.
You imagine a person could be joined to the Church after death? I would think this would have to happen before the moment of death and, hence, the person would be incorporated into the Church during this life.

I don’t imagine anything, I am just saying what the Church teaches. The Church teaches that those outside the earthly membership of the Church can be saved through a mechanism that is not fully understood. I seem to recall the terminology “mystical union,” although I can not remember if that comes from LG, the Catechism or somewhere else.

So let me get this straight: a bunch of men are so out of control that nuns were legitimately terrified of being raped and the response was not to remove the nuns from the danger or restore law and order or to provide extra security, but to give them some very strange sounding drugs that would interrupt their natural courses?
Assuming that the story is true (and I don’t think we have any consensus on that, we may never), I have wondered the same thing — why place nuns in that kind of danger to begin with? Why not send male religious instead? I don’t suppose armed bodyguards would have been an option — or would it?

And yes, throughout history, there have been certain cultures (if you can call them that) where the men, perceiving themselves as conquering warriors, used rape as a means of terror and domination, as well as satisfying a particularly wild form of concupiscence. More simply put, it was the macho thing to do in warfare.

I am divorced and do not have an annulment. I am perfectly happy being a celibate bachelor and a single father.
It is wonderful that you are able to focus on raising your son!

I would ask you to be cautious with comparing the experience of abstaining for a divorced single father to what a married couple that is sleeping in the same bed on a regular basis experiences. A married couple that must struggle to keep a marriage healthy, happy and productive will find avoiding relations extremely difficult. Suddenly it starts to seem that as a couple they only have the difficult parts of marriage without any of the positives. It is hard to find ways to remain intimate without sex, and some couples never find the way to make things work. Those couple begin fighting more and their marriages suffer. As a divorced dad, you don’t have the same temptations, struggles or responsibilities. (Not saying it’s easier or harder, it simply is not the same)

I realize it is not the same. However, the reality remains that some people are called upon to bear extraordinary crosses, and often these are crosses that seem too hard for anyone to bear. The person who is in a car accident and becomes a quadriplegic, the person who is victim to a horrible form of cancer that causes excruciating suffering, the person who has to overcome powerful internal temptations not of their making — all of these require great sacrifice, and it is not always obvious that there is an eventual way out.

And so it is for couples for whom pregnancy would have serious, undesired consequences. The world offers tempting “ways out” — contraception, sterilization, recourse to unnatural acts, and so on. And it is not always a matter of pregnancy. What of couples where one partner simply cannot have natural relations, due to an injury or illness? And the unafflicted other partner desires relations but cannot have them? What of people who, for whatever reason, simply cannot find a marital partner and are unlikely ever to be able to find one? What of homosexual people for whom no legitimate outlet for their sexuality can even exist?

Fact is, the sexual side of life often requires sacrifices that the larger, secular society refuses to accept, because aside from the supernatural motive for those sacrifices, there really is no other motive.

There are other motives. Go to the CDC website and read about the current STD epidemic in the US. A practical motive to avoid STDs means that there are people who will not have sex until marriage and husbands who will continue to stay with their wives if, after marriage, it turns out she can’t have children. And there are those who will not marry.

I agree with you, but this is yet another scenario where the secular world offers “ways out” of perpetual and complete continence — use of condoms, self-pleasure, performing acts where the disease cannot be transmitted, and so on.

It is easy to show that once God is abandoned, human beings have a finite set of choices about how they will live their lives. An example: “As long as someone has food in his mouth, a roof over his head and someone in his bed” that’s all.
