Humans were created sinful. Then we were told not to sin. Is that a fair demand?

I agree, that’s an important theological point which he seems to be fudging. But at the same time I don’t think it’s a crucial one for answering his question. Even if one insists that “inclined to sin” is equivalent to “designed to sin,” it would still be entirely reasonable for God to demand cooperation with His grace in order to overcome this flaw.
It can’t be easy to successfully criticize the wisdom of the Church… He gave it a good try though. 🙂
Why would God design us to sin? Surely it would be evil to create us to disobey Him!

Let’s look at your statement.

“Why would God design us to sin?”

This is a presupposition that God made it so that so we HAD to sin.
Whereas this is false. It’s that God made it so that we could freely choose to love Him, as He had the free will to Love us. However, free will has a price. And as you can see, in that context, we were made with the distinct ability to choose. And we still have that choice.

It’s just common sense. If God didn’t like his blueprint for humans he’d have changed it.
And done what? Made robots instead, that could neither choose evil nor choose to love?

Men were created with a natural disposition to love God.
“Having received, therefore, a command to love God, we have possessed the innate power of loving from the first moment of our creation. Of this, no external proof is required, since anyone can discover it of himself and within himself. We are by nature desirous of the beautiful, even though individual conceptions of the beautiful differ widely (St. Basil, The Longer Rule, Q.2R).”
God is the eternal beauty that is reflected in this world, and in the spiritual world, and in the virtues. We all desire beauty and therefore our disposition is toward God who is beauty itself.
