Humble Questions to Catholics

One more word on the title of Mother of God.

I wrote a paper on this some time ago. Theotokos (“God-Bearer”) was used to honor Mary starting in the early 3rd century. It was especially important during this time because some heresies were popping up denying Christ’s divinity. If Mary is not the Mother of God, then Jesus is not God.

Hehe. Yes, actually, I think I have. May I respectfully say that Dr. Ruckman does not have a good grasp on Catholicism at all. He was arguing with a straw man much of the time in that debate, and he was not charitable either.
Wow. I’m watching that debate right now. Dr. Ruckman really doesn’t know what he’s talking about, does he? It looks like he makes his arguments as he goes along.

Not to mention, he doesn’t treat Karl Keating very nicely either.

No kidding. When I first watched it, I alternated between wanting to smash my computer and wanting to laugh at the guy. In the end, though, I think we know which of the two men displayed more Christian charity. 😉

God Bless the President of Catholic Answers, Karl Keating! 😃

Tough crowd, I must say. A lot of them seemed like they were out to get him.

Thank you for that. I thought of Nestorianism when he started questioning the “Mother of God” epithet*, but I wasn’t sure if he’d accept the Council of Ephesus as an authority — the ecumenical councils aren’t in the Bible!

*Here, of course, in its older sense that does not refer to derogatory terms.

It seemed to me like Ruckman was getting them riled on purpose. Although I noticed that they seemed a bit meeker toward the end.

In any case, if Ruckman is the kind of guy non-Catholics get their information about Catholicism from, no wonder there are some people who think we’re pagan cannibals slavering for their destruction. 😦

It’s so sad 😦 Ruckman couldn’t debate our doctrine properly because he didn’t know what it was!

I think that the three Persons of the Trinity are, by definition, separated to some degree. In the context that Cody used it, it makes perfect sense to use “separate” as a synonym for “distinct.”
But the problem is ‘seperate’ is NOT a synonym for distinct, so why try and use it as such. If you mean seperate, say ‘seperate’, if you mean distinct, say ‘distinct’.

I still don’t see why you would even bother praying through anyone else, when you can pray to Jesus Christ. Especially, when there is no where in scripture where it says to pray through someone other than Jesus Christ, the one mediator.

I agree that Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, God manifest, but what I’m trying to say is that Mary did not give birth to the Father.

Can you show me the verse in 1 Corinthians that you are saying refers to Purgatory?

Concerning the tradition of men…

Colossians 2:8 “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” KJV
I think you’re going to have to define “pray through” for me.

When I say the Hail Mary, I ask Mary to pray for me. “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners…” If I ask you to pray for “us sinners” is that praying “through” you?

Cody,
Your questions are good ones but there is a far more important question that must be asked first.
To all our Catholic friend here is the question.
Q. Have you come to the place in your spiritual life where you know for sure that when you die that you will be in heaven with God?
Why or why not?

I trust in the love of God, his mercy and justice. I am most certain of this after a contrite confession and alms giving.

Yes, assuming I don’t turn my back on Him. Catholics believe we never give up our free will, so at any point during my life I still have the choice to turn my back on Him. Just because today I am in a state of grace (meaning I have no mortal sin upon me) doesn’t mean tomorrow I won’t find some temptation so appealing that I decide to turn away. I have to choose every single day of my life if I choose the Lord or not. It is philosophically very different from many of our Protestant brothers and sisters. We never say that God will over ride our free will. We always are allowed to choose.

Also, as a side note, I think the praying to the Saints which bothers most Protestants, is that we are the most incredibly inclusive Christians - we include the dead as well. Just because you have died, you are not separated from us (assuming you are in heaven or purgatory). You are still part of the Body of Christ and so we can ask you to pray for us just like I can ask my neighbors to pray for us. We don’t discriminate against the dead 🙂

Do you know for sure? I ask because I would like to know how you know that. Do you know for sure that you will never sin again? It seems a little presumptuous to think that no matter what you do for the rest of your life you have the “get out of jail free” card at your disposal.

I would never elevate myself to the place of judge, and therefore of God, by presuming to know definitively where i’ll end up. Now that said, I think that if one follows the precepts of the faith and keeps the commandments, they can be reasonably sure that they will enter heaven, yes.

I am saved by the Blood of Christ alone. I am Eternally Secure and Sealed.

Ephesians 4:30 "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."

1 Peter 1:5 "Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."

**Romans 3:22 “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:” **

1 John 5:13 "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

Colossians 1:14 "In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:"

Ephesians 1:7 "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;"

2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

*Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast."

I worded one of my questions wrong. I believe that Mary is the Mother of Jesus, God manifest, but I don’t believe she is the Mother of God the Father. Wanted to clear that up. So do you guys believe that she is the Mother of God the Father?
Hi Cody,

She is not, at least in the sense that humanity would understand, the Mother of either “The Father”, or for that matter, the “Mother of the Holy Spirit.”

And yet, there is but One God: Eph. 4: 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all

We profess belief in the Blessed Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. One Divine shared Nature and three “persons” who are “seperate” yet unabled to be seperated.

The answer is NO!

Very good quotes. What happens to you if you commit a sin and die in the next minute?

**Dear friends in Christ,

As a point of clairification on the TERM: “BROTHERS”**

Please review the following bible verses. All reference “BROTHERS”; in “BLUE’ are when the term “brothers” actually means, “blood relative Bothers.” In “RED” are examples of the term “BROTHERS” referring to Apostles, deciples, and followers. NOT blood-relatives.

The term is “interchangeable!”

Mt. 4; 18 “As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Mt. 7: 3 “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?”

1 Cot. 8: 13 “Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother’s falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall.”

Luke 14: 12 “He [Jesus] said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid. “

1 Tim. 5: 1” Do not rebuke an older man but exhort him as you would a father; treat younger men like brothers, 2 older women like mothers, younger women like sisters, in all purity”.

Mark 10: 28 “Peter began to say to him, “Lo, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.”

1 Cor. 9: 1 “ Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? 2 If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. 3 This is my defense to those who would examine me. 4* Do we not have the right to our food and drink? 5 Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas?”

Luke 21: 16 “You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death”

I hope this clarifies the matter once and for all:)🤷
