Why is it difficult for some people to handle the truth than others? Is it pride? I do not think we are all “equal.” Is pride really an issue for all of us? All that God promises is suffering if you follow him. If you think you are pretty, God will show your imperfections. If you think you are smart, God will show you are foolish. Some people do not need others help as much as others. Everything that happens to you is for your own good, right?

Humility comes from the Latin word humus, meaning “dirt”…which is also the root word for “human”.

Humility, then, is to accept the truth that you and I are human, and all that entails. We may be weak, we may have ugliness, but do you know what the Bible says about us?

What is man that thou art mindful of him,
and the son of man that thou dost care for him?

Yet thou hast made him little less than God,
and dost crown him with glory and honor.
Thou hast given him dominion over the works of thy hands;
thou hast put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the sea.

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is thy name in all the earth!

Psalm 8:4-9

“All that God promises is suffering if you follow him.” You will suffer here on earth whether you follow Him or not. Or can you dispute this?

What He does promise though when you follow Jesus is joy and peace that conquers this world of pain and suffering.

“I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

To make things simple: Humility means that you know that you can achieve nothing without God’s help. We are just miserable beings and if we do not accept that, then we are bound to fail.

I don’t know why it is harder for some to handle the truth than others
Yes pride is an issue for all of us.
God does not only promise suffering if we follow him. If that were the case, then why follow?
God does say that we will suffer (temporarily) and need to bear our cross (for a time), but God also promises eternal life with Him in heaven.
The evil one on the other hand - offers happiness (temporarily) and laying aside our cross (for a time) and then promises eternal death and suffering…

So which is the better deal?

Yes - everything that happens is for our own good…and will be so, if we stay focused on Love by which we draw closer to God.

Peace
James

Wow. That is beautiful. Thanks, James!

For the proud, humility is like a heavily armed guard who keeps a constant eye on the prison cell door. But for the righteous, humility is like the liberator who frees the helpless slave from the evil of his or her wicked master.
