We do hunger for real values. That’s why the hippie movement started and why there are so many magazines full of tips on how to be more like people we see as having a more true sense of what matters. We buy candles to be like the star who wants to be like the lama. We buy shoes because of an ad that shows an idealistic-looking girl in tribal regalia wearing the shoes. We watch movies about heroes in history. We want to be more real, more grounded, more sincere, more like we assume the pioneers were, or the Indians, or someone in the old days before we were so shallow and flighty, but we can’t seem to muster the self-discipline.
