Hunting or sports and skipping Mass on Sunday

What should I do when my family doesn’t have one of their kids at mass because that child has a sporting event or hunting to do instead?

When my kids have sporting events that they participate in that fall on a Sunday either their school offers Mass before the event for the athletes or they will attend the Sat. Evening Mass.

Who do you mean by “my family?” Do you mean siblings of yours, cousins, or what?

What is your relationship with them?

I mean, all you can do is remind them that Mass is a holy obligation and that it’s a mortal sin to miss Mass. You can suggest Saturday evening or Sunday evening Masses even if they have to go to another parish to attend. You can suggest Confession for themselves and the children. You can suggest going together as a family to an alternate Mass or volunteer to pick the kids up for Mass.

But, you can’t really “do” anything except make sure you and your own children/spouse attend Mass every week.

Thank you for your reply. They are my siblings and my one concern was if they were commiting a mortal sin. So to not be guilty of their sin I must say something to them and then let it go?

P.S. I have three boys that know how important Mass is on Sundays and nothing stands in our way, not even vacations.:

Have you suggested that they attend Sat evening mass or perhaps Sunday afternoon mass if they can not make Sunday morning mass?

What’s your point? That the rest of us that have kids but attend Mass on Saturday are sinning in some way? Or perhaps we put more value in sporting events then Mass?

All of my kids know how important Mass is, either on Sat evening or Sunday morning and NOTHING stands in our way not even vacations:thumbsup:

Do you know for certain that they skip mass all together -

I have a very open relationship with my sibs, if they were Catholic we’d have this conversation:

Me: “Want to get breakfast after 8 AM Mass on Sunday”

Sib: “Little Johnny has a soccer game in Ft. Smith”.

Me: “Ahhh, where are you going to go to Mass over there?”

Sib “We will be busy and tired, we will just skip it this week”

Me “Remember, sibby, skipping Mass ‘just because’ is grave matter. I’ll find Mass times for you over there, or, you can call Fr. Joe and ask about a dispensation from Mass.”

Are you SURE they are missing mass? One good “in” would be if you happen to be a godparent for one of the kids involved~then you have a legitimate reason to inquire. Otherwise…the only thing you have power to insist upon is the attendance of your own immediate family.
