Archbishop Burke Appointed to Congregation for Divine Worship: Has Pro-Life Significance

VATICAN, July 9, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Pope Benedict XVI has named Archbishop Raymond Burke as a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

The appointment of Archbishop Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura (the Vatican’s highest court), is significant due to the fact that it is this congregation that oversees the distribution of Holy Communion; Archbishop Burke is perhaps the most vocal figure in the Vatican on the need to deny Communion to obstinately pro-abortion politicians.

The Code of Canon Law, in canon 915, states that “those who have been … obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to holy communion.”
While still a cardinal, the pope himself wrote to the United States bishops saying that a Catholic politician who votes for “permissive abortion and euthanasia laws,” after being duly instructed and warned, “must” be denied Communion.

The current prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, Cardinal Antonio Canizares, has also attested that canon 915 must be applied to pro-abortion politicians. Prefect emeritus, Cardinal Francis Arinze, balked at the notion that a cardinal was needed to answer the question, saying that even children at First Communion would insist that Communion should be denied to such individuals.

Many bishops ignore or even oppose this directive, affirmed repeatedly by numerous Vatican officials; but Archbishop Burke maintains that bishops have no choice in the matter.

“The Church’s law is very clear,” he told LifeSiteNews in January 2009. “The person who persists publicly in grave sin is to be denied Holy Communion, and it [Canon Law] doesn’t say that the bishop shall decide this. It’s an absolute.”

About Time!! It has been a scandal and those who are pro-abortion and receiving have not been in a state of grace leaving their souls in jeopardy. I’ve repeatedly said that those who are pro-abortion can’t be Catholic. Now Pelosi, Biden etc. will have to chose what is important to them. If they chose to go elsewhere, fine.
 
It is about that the Church assume her authority. it has been too long the mockery of the Church. the Church has been saying one thing and doing another for too long.

it is time to separate the goats from the sheep. because of the goats the Church has lost influence in the world.

i wonder what happens to the Church in NY, the one that supports gays and lesbians in the Church.
the holy father said that the Church would be small. could this be the beginning of this? those who refuse to repent will probably go on their way and formed their own churches, but the Church once again will be the light of the world showing Truth and morality.

We need more Abp’s like HE Burke. The fruits of Vat 2 have not been very “edible”. Mostly spoiled fruits.

It will be interesting to see if those who have not listened will in humility buckle under and follow the narrow path, or if they will remain obdurate and having their own following???
 
I hope that Archbishop Burke makes a difference. It seems doubtful, since both the current and former prefects of CDW hold the same position as Abp. Burke and haven’t been successful convincing wavering bishops.

Now if Archbishop (soon to be Cardinal) Burke is elected Pope sometime down the line… then we might be talking. 👍
