QUICUMQUE VULT:
God Bless you all for your prayers, My intention was to ride it out.
I have reconsidered and am now packing to leave.

I live in uptown New Orleans, the City is like A Ghost Town this Morning.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor, Hasten to help us!
I am glad that you are evacuating and pray that all who have the means to will do so as well and that those who cannot will go to the local shelters. I have seen some people on the news that don’t seem to understand the severity of the situation and hope that authorities can get through to them to take it seriously. Of even greater than normal concern, New Orleans is particularly vulnerable due to the topography of the area.

All in the path of Katrina are in my prayers. God Bless you.

Just when you thought the news could not get any worse…

This hurricane can not only destroy parts of Louisiana and surrounding states, it can damage our nation’s economy.

Oil prices could go as high as $75 a barrel or more because of this, hurting the economy. It may cause hiring freezes.

I have been VERY worried about this since oil prices sky rocketed last year. Not only loss of life, loss of property, you may also have loss of jobs nationwide.
  • The 19 Louisiana refineries operating in 1995 accounted for 15 percent of the nation’s refining capacity.
  • Louisiana produced oil accounts for 21 percent of the refinery (name removed by moderator)ut. Other sources of crude oil include the Gulf of Mexico, other states and foreign countries.
  • If restricted to only Louisiana crude oil the refineries in Louisiana could only operate two months each year.
  • The 19 Louisiana refineries spend $17.5 billion each year on crude oil, wages and salaries, taxes and vendor services.
  • Approximately half of that amount, $8 billion, is spent in Louisiana each year.
  • The Louisiana refineries employ 8,700 Louisiana residents.
  • The Louisiana vendors used by the refineries employ another 88,000 persons.
  • Approximately 48 percent of the refinery vendors earn one-fourth of their income from refinery business. Approximately 27 percent of the vendors earn half of their income from refineries while 14 percent earn 75 percent or more of their income from the refineries.
  • The refinery vendors account for more than 8 percent of all the business establishments in Louisiana.
  • Each Louisiana vendor doing business with a refinery, does business with an average of 41 other Louisiana businesses.
  • The average annual salary for a refinery employee is $47,000, or more than twice the $20,000 earned by the average employee for all industries statewide.

Imported oil from other nations goes into Louisiana to be refined into gasoline and other petrol products.

All new refineries must be built near Atlantic ports (New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New England) and in areas less prone to hurricanes. We have way too many eggs in one basket. Especially when we are short on eggs and baskets. But this is another topic.

To the people who may loose their job because of this hurricane, there is no FEMA to rebuild, only unemployment.

Pray. :gopray:

I just started to streamlink the audio.
The winds are now at 175 MPH!

Devestation strength, most of the area will be uninhabitable. All gable roofs will not survive. Complete wall and roof failure is expected.

THis is unbelievalbe!
High rises buildings will be swaying drastically. New Orleans will practiable be unhabitable for weeks!

I am getting this from the streamlink radio saite!
It may be LARGER than Camille!
Lord have Mercy!

2 pm EDT update. No change in wind speed. Still 175 mph and still heading for New Orleans.

The Superdome is being used for ‘last chance’ refuge. I wonder if the structure will stand up to the fury? Does anyone have any info about the dome?

Dear God, this one is going to go straight into the history books! This monster is huge. I’m saying prayers for everyone in its path. I’m watching the cable news coverage right now (2:23 P.M. EST) and one station said that there is actually only ONE shelter in all of New Orleans-- the Superdome. That is the only choice left for everyone who can’t make it out of the city. The lines are long at the sports complex and the station reporter said that when Katrina hits, the Superdome may well lose all power, which means that everyone sheltered in there will have no lights, no air conditioning, NOTHING. The conditions may become very difficult for those people. This is just about the worse thing that can happen to the city of New Orleans and the entire Gulf Coast area, and will negatively impact our country’s economy. May God help us all. Please pray for everyone there.

Is it possible to start a rosary here that we can all be part of?
We have done this in the past, for various needs.
If I knew enough, I would do it myself…

Does anyone have a time when it might hit? I’m sure news must have stated but I didn’t here it?

I pray for everyone

It is now 184mph, with a central pressure of 902 millibars! It’s worse than Andrew! Let’s get that Rosary thread started. I don’t know how to do it either, but let’s find out soon, because it is supposed to hit tonight!

I pm’ed a mod, but haven’t heard back yet…If anybody knows how we do this, please start one! This has the potential to be the worst in our country’s history…

Has anyone considered finding out how to get relief aid to the area after the hurricane passes. There are gonna be many thousands who will need aid.

What you can do is
Start the Rosary thread Now.
Then contact the Mods, that way they can still move the thread as it is being used.

I believe it was mentioned catholic relief and other charities were ready to help and I’m sure red cross…

The rosary thead has been started by Zooey!

To make this effective, everyone should be working in shifts…not to overcrowd the rosary. (It will be very easy to mis count the Hail Mary’s and etc).

OK We have THREE rosary threads, pick one and stay on THAT rosary thread.

Zooey has started 2
and Lisa4Catholics has the other one!

Another scary thing was related by a former weather forecaster who went through three hurricanes along the gulf coast. People move to higher ground to escape the rising water and so do snakes. He recalled seeing the bodies of many people who had died from snakebite.

FEMA, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Baptist Brotherhood and others are already preparing to go and do what they can. The SC Baptists usually send two tractor trailers, one full of food and the other containing a complete kitchen. Volunteers go to cook and serve the food. No restoration work in the city can be done until it can be pumped dry. After the water subsides, the pumps are capable of removing an inch of water per hour, so they’re looking at being underwater for ten days or more.
