The Magi remind us of the catholicity or universality of the Church. These wise men from the East represent the peoples of the whole earth who set out in search of the new-born King of the Jews. They went to Bethlehem to adore Him. They offered Him symbolic gifts. They are forerunners of all the peoples of different races, languages, and cultures who, through the centuries, seek Jesus and meet Him in His Church.

We perhaps take for granted the universality of the Catholic Church. It is an important “mark of the Church.” We believe that God calls all people to salvation and that the Gospel is meant to be spread to the nations of the whole world. The Second Vatican Council taught that this gift of universality which adorns the People of God is a gift from the Lord Himself whereby the Catholic Church ceaselessly and efficaciously seeks for the return of all humanity and all its good under Christ the Head in the unity of His Spirit ( *Lumen gentium* 13).

The earliest known depiction of the Tree of Jesse in Christian art is nearly a thousand years old, found in an illustrated manuscript of the Gospels that dates from the year 1086 in Bohemia. (What’s the Origin of the Jesse Tree?)

On the bottom of the tree, Jesse sleeps—an allegory that brings to mind the sleeping Adam, while God fashioned Eve from his side. From the sleeping Jesse, God brings forth a new lineage—the royal lineage that proclaims the sovereignty of God. The tree that sprouts out from him is like a dream, a vision of hope for justice, peace, and faithfulness to reign over the suffering, turmoil, and despair of our world. The Church of the Visitation honors the visit paid by Mary, Jesus’ mother, to Elizabeth, John the Baptist’s mother. (Luke 1:39-56) This is the site where tradition tells us that Mary recited her song of praise, the Magnificat, one of the most ancient hymns to Mary.[1] . The church is beautifully adorned with tiled representations of that canticle in many of the worlds languages.

"The saints teach us that to grow in that relationship, we need to meditate on the life of Christ, so we always have in our minds the scenes from his life, the words of his teaching.

So, it is important for us to build time into our daily lives to “meet” Jesus in the Gospels. One easy way to do that is to make a few minutes to read the Gospel passage that the Church assigns for each day of the year.

One option is to subscribe to the free email service from DailyGospel.org. What I like about this is that they send the Gospel for each day along with a reflection on the Gospel that is drawn from the writings of the Church Fathers, the saints, or the “Catechism of the Catholic Church,” or other Church teaching documents. The service is offered in a variety of languages, and I find that it encourages lectio divina.

That is the most important thing: to read the Gospels with prayer, always asking the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Read the passage slowly; pay attention to the little details, letting our Lord’s words and actions sink in. Meditate on what you read. What stands out in the reading? Is it one of the characters, a certain word, a movement, or a sign?

Read and read again. Ask the Lord to tell you what he wants you to hear. Then, before concluding your reading, just be silent, contemplate, “rest” in the Lord."

Gaudete Sunday

Its name is taken from the entrance antiphon of the Mass, which is: Gaudete in Domino semper!

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.
Indeed, the Lord is near.

This is a quotation from Philippians 4:4-5, and in Latin, the first word of the antiphon is gaudete (Latin, “rejoice”; it’s also pronounced with three syllables: gau-de-te )

But Gaudete Sunday offers something for those who have fallen away from the Lord as well, those who have drifted from the path. Christ came into the world for sinners, not for the righteous. He became man, and went to the cross, and conquered death, and ascended to heaven, for the broken, the lost, the stubborn, and the reprobate. Christ came into the world so that all people might live in the freedom of truth, and in the joy of his love.
