I family member asked me about our plans and I said that we are still planning to move to the state. She later asked my husband the same questions and he said that no we are not moving. I was sitting with them at the table with them when he said this, and said that that was news to me because I check home listings every week , and asked him why and he said to me in a nasty tone “because you don’t want to move where I want to move in that state …”. when instead he could have said oh I thought we were holding off on the move or something low key statement to end the discussion.
I agree this person’s behaviour is odd, but why bite? Why did you let her rudeness lead to a fight with your husband? If you know that you and your husband have issues with fighting in public, why did you put him on the spot like this?

As others have noted, you cannot change others but only yourself. And so the main change you can make is to choose to discuss such issues later in private.

Thank you all for your insightful replies.

My husband does seem to have an OCD personality problem and I do find his comments and bossiness irritating.

Admittedly, there are a few people ( and said in-law is one of them) who bring out prideful behavior on my part.

I have been depressed lately,( my mother died recently and left a whole host of problems for me to handle) and it probably was not a good time to entertain this unsupportive and irritating in-law but because the occasion marked a family milestone for my husband’s mother, I invited her over. So my sense of humor is a little rusty right now but I can see the wisdom in using humor to combat irritating remarks and suggestions.

I did have one winning moment when an other in-law, who happened to be the honored guest of the event that day tried to suggest that all the work that my sons and husband where doing that day was done for me. I did overhear her comment and said loudly, Oh no dear! this is all for you today! It felt good because I often don’t know what to say when someone tries to twist a situation.

And I
Repent from the aspects of your irritability that were yours to control that you did not control, pray the Our Father now and confess this when you can, and as a penance forgive the bad behavior of others against you as beyond your place to judge as controllable or not. After all, the more merciful we are to others, the easier it will becomes to accept the mercy we need ourselves. Mercy is a great salve; apply it liberally and often!
