i just couldnt figure out why my husband has been acting the way he is. (see previous posts). while cleaning out his gym bag that he leaves all over the floor, i found a bottle of androstenedione.

i had no idea what it was until i did research on the internet and i found this:

onlinelawyersource.com/androstenedione/index.html

apparantly its been banned here in the US!!! it is a pre-testosterone drug that your body makes into testosterone is what i gather. some websites list severe aggression and mood side effects from these pills.

i guess his new gym kick now includes taking “andro” as the websites call it. from what ive read, it supposedly helps the body to “increase muscle mass”.

there was also a caplets of Ephedra, which i found out was banned as well!!! Ephedra is suposed to give you energy to workout, but i read that there have been deaths caused by it too!!!

all the websites (including the FDA) seem to say that really bad mood effects are caused by these supplements. i think this could explain his behavior, and other things.

my question is what do i do??? online legal resources say that it is only illegal to SELL these products, but not to HAVE them. do i need to worry about the police coming to arrest him?

and why would he take these if there are such bad side effects? how do i get him to stop? maybe if he stops, he wont be such a bad husband anymore!!! i really need advise on what to do!!!

Print out short summaries of the side effects and leave them in his gym bag with his supplements, along with a list of good recources to do his own research.

You can’t stop him from taking them (he can always hide them better), but you can provide him with the tools to make an informed decision. Hopefully, it will be the right one.

The trick is to do this in a non-threatening way, hence the gym bag. You can include a written note saying how you value his health, excercise is great, but you would rather have him whole and well than buff (via supplements). Tell him how much you loved him, and how incredebly sexy you found him even BEFORE he started at the gym.

I would recommend looking for some legal, healthy alternatives to suggest to him instead of these illegal drugs. Creatine, for example, is perfectly legal, and produced naturally in the body. It can get a tad expensive if you over-supplement, but no more so than the illegal ones. It helps build muscle mass.
I think this situation points at a bigger problem, though. Why does he think he needs to use these supplements? You might approach him with, “I’m really worried about your new fanatic gym kick, and when I found these, I had to mention something. I love you the way you are, the way you were, no matter what your physical condition, and I can tell these supplements have affected your personality. Haven’t you noticed the way you’re behaving lately? I’m really glad you want to be healthier, and I’ll totally support you with the gym, but lets try to find some alternatives without harmful side effects.”

I’d say don’t be too confratational. If you come off as really upset, he’s might just think of you as crazy, cause after all tons of people are taking these things and they don’t have all these bad side effects. Atleast thats what he’s probably going to think from his point of view. Chances are a lot of the side effects are going to come with chronic use, which often seem too far away. I think you’d also have psycological side effects, he’s not going to feel like he’s doing much if he’s off these supplaments. Finally one other problem is going to be especially if your confrational, is that he probably has a very high spike of testasteron. You get those hormones in you, and he’s going to be moody and aggressive. Being confratational is only going to make him worse.

I cannot think of what is best to bring up when talking to him about this, maybe someothers have some good ideas. But I think it’s going to be a long slow process, especially cause I doubt he sees any problem with it. So your going to have to pray for him and love him, and give reasons why you don’t like his decision. Lets make sure to say prayers for you.

I’ve been a supplements/workout addict for years. With being confrontational, try to talk about it with him.

Andro is basically a useless supplement that artificially increases testosterone. The side effects can be the same as ones from anabolic steroids (mood swings, weight gain, etc.) The worst part is that Andro is basically useless when it comes to actual benefits. Any testosterone that your body doesn’t use is converted to estrogen. This is why so many professional wrestlers needed “breast reduction” surgery a few years back. Seriously.

If he’s willing, send your husband to the Muscle and Fitness message boards (boards.muscleandfitness.com/) There are plenty of “safe” supplements. I take ZMA every night before bed, for example. It’s just zinc and magnesium, but the combination not only naturally increases your testosterone, but also makes you tired. The sleep is very productive, and that also helps muscles grow naturally instead of artificially.

On a side note, I don’t think andro is officially banned in the US. Ephedrine is now, but I think andro is just out of favor since there are so many more productive, and safer supplements out there.

Yay! I finally got to live out my dream of giving exercise supplement advice on a Catholic message board 🙂

If you look at the death of those who died from using “ephedra” and/or “andro” it had nothing to do with the supplament, but the fact that they(users) did not follow directions. I checked it out myself and used both products for about 3 years but now don’t, I just take a protien drink, creatine and a multi-vitamin alternated with zinc and mag. I don’t have any heart or kidney problems.

Back to the side effects. Mood swings are not directly from any supplement. Andro did not make me angry or moody. I think it is the individual who sees what he likes and becomes full of himself. Ephedra if taken corrrectlly and if the person stays properly hydrated will not kill you. I wish I had the website for you but I don’t remember it.

Most of the death that happened was due to kidney failure and we all know that being properly hydrated will help keep your kidney from failing. If you look at the atheletes who died they were wrestlers and football players trying to cut weight. Guess what was the first thing they stopped doing, yep drinking water.

Hey on my way. As a sort of aside, do you know how they died of kidney failure? I don’t think kidney failure is something you really need to die of here in the US. Did they have some heart complications that go along with it? Maybe potassium levels became too irregular?

I don’t mean to sound offensive, this is an honest question for you to consider:

Who is he trying to impress?

I mean, you’re his wife…and if you make it clear that you don’t want him to take these things for the sake of being muscular…than why should he care if he is muscular? Ask him that. Unless there is someone else he is trying to impress (or intimidate)…why should he body-build if the woman he loves doesn’t want him too?

Though I don’t know him and I cannot say why he is doing it. He may not be really trying to impress someone else. I’ve hung around people who where body builders and I myself run. He may be doing it just enjoy doing it and the challege of building more muscle. He may be just trying to impress his buddies or himself.

I think its a good thing to try to be healthy, but there are problems when you start taking things that can hurt your health. Also problems when you focus on that more the challeng and neglict those around you.

I think the OP is in a really rough spot. I doubt he is really seeing any problem with what he is doing, so if you are too agressive in a confratation, its probably only going to drive them farther apart. On My Way seemed to have some good advice, check up on good alternatives from resources he’d respect and give them to him.

heh, i have to laugh at that supplement.
Point out that in a man with normal testosterone levels, andro aromatizes in the body, binds to testosterone receptors and actually mimics the effects of estrogen. have him take andro and eat 30 grams of soy protein a day (another phytoesterol) and he’ll have no sex drive in about a month. andro didn’t make certain baseball players large and strong. Testosterone by perscription did. Deca and host of other anabolics are dispensed like candy if you have the right channels. Andro will not make you increase size. if steroids are nuclear bombs, andro is a firecracker that doesn’t light. and with anabolics the general rule is anything oral you avoid like the plague. only injections lower risks of liver and kdiney problems. once again, doctor supervised.

In my humble experience, the only supplements that work well are #1 is Creatine. It works. period. to increase the abilities of the muscle to fire longer and with greater intensity to increase strength. usually 10 grams a day for the first 10 days then you can maintain that or drop to 3 grams and you’ll have the same benefits.

A zinc stack at bedtime (sold in a variety of places, or you can combine them yourself)

and a supplement - multivitamin, plus eat protein at about 1 to 1.5 grams per pound of lean body weight.

other than that, the secret to muscle size is REGULAR EXERCISE with resistance. Even steroids require a great deal of work! you have to put the time in under the steel. no shortcuts.

oh, and the most important ingredient for muscle growth. rest. rest. rest. sleep. sleep. sleep. rest some more. the muscle only grows in adaptation to stress of exercise when it is rested and allowed down time.

and if he is a beer drinker, tell him to LAY OFF ALL ACHOHOL. it oxidizes and destroy free testosterone in the blood. if he drinks, especially at night, he’ll cut his testosterone levels in half with two drinks. the effect lasts for 12 hours.

you can’t fool mother nature. If someone wants to do steroids, i know from very personal experience ( i was a personal trainer for 10 years and worked at 5 gyms) that you do it with a doctors supervision, with frequent blood tests (once a week to check liver function and such) and you do it with the knowledge you WILL have health problems in the future.

From andro all he’ll get is a drop in libido.

Ephedra is not the beast people make it out to be. More people died in donkey accidents last year that from ephedra. The first woman to die, and the case the FDA took up was a woman who was 500 pounds, who took 9 times the reccomended dose. she had a history or heart disease.
more people are seriously injured or killed by APIRIN in any given year in the USA than ephedra did worldwide. a few dumb people took off the shelves a herb thats been used in chinese medicine for 3000+ years for treating asthma and congestion.

Hi,

Just some thoughts…

Be sure that you make it clear to him that you are mainly concerned because you love him so much that you want him around for as long as possible and that you would hate for him to get stopped by a cop and busted for something like this.

You can point out that you’ve noticed that he has been acting differently and that the stuff really is having its side effects on him and that you’re very concerned and want that personality that you fell in love with back.

Finally, begin a novena of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for him asap.
Pax tecum,
