Hymn/Song not used for an extremely long time

…for example, there are hundreds of forgotten hymns for every Amazing Grace. I like to speculate on that which we use today, and even find inspiring, wondering what will still inspire in the Twenty-second Century.
You hit on probably the most important point: what actually inspired that song or lyrics. Was it the Mass itself or something else? Anything can trigger emotion.

That said, I would say some leeway can be given to recessional hymns, depending on the season and other factors, of course. After all, you have been dismissed. 🙂

I love those recessional hymns. At my parish, it’s usually the time when this former Protestant gets to belt out some good old-fashioned hymns. Warning - if you are sitting in my pew, I am not leaving until the organ stops, so go out the other way. :p:D

At Sunday Mass the hymn A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing was used.
This song had not been sung for a long time.

My off the cuff response is: Anything not corrupted by the Feminist Psalter.
:eek:

My church sang “The Church’s One foundation” (AURELIA) today. While I think this parish does keep it in rotation, it is not really one I am familiar from other parishes (we have only been members a few years). In fact, the lyrics of this one really struck me today, so I don’t even think they use it very often, but I must hear the tune elsewhere. They also sing “Faith of Our Fathers” (ST. CATHERINE) regularly, which again, I wasn’t familiar with outside this parish. (I am probably not a good judge, as I went to charismatic parish growing up, and then my Catholic college used a more contemporary hymnal).

I love “O God Beyond All Praising” (THAXTED) but it is not in our hymnal, so I never hear it.

Also “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say” (KINGSFOLD), is one of my favorites, but I understand there is not always a good place for it, so it is not used much.

We use The Church’s One Foundation and I heard the Voice of Jesus say very often.

This weekend we sang the following hymn after Communion a beautiful hymn that only appears maybe 3 times a year:

O Bread of Heaven openbuildings.com/buildings/st-paul-s-harringay-profile-24257?_show_description=1

Text:
O Bread of Heaven, beneath this veil
Thou dost my very God conceal:
My Jesus, dearest treasure, hail!
I love Thee and, adoring, kneel;
Each loving soul by Thee is fed
With Thine own Self in form of Bread.

O food of life, Thou Who dost give
The pledge of immortality;
I live, no 'tis not I that live;
God gives me life, God lives in me:
He feeds my soul, He guides my ways,
And every grief with joy repays.

O Bond of love that dost unite
The servant to his living Lord;
Could I dare live and not requite
Such love - then death were meet reward:
I cannot live unless to prove
Some love for such unmeasured love.

Beloved Lord, in Heaven above
There, Jesus, Thou awaitest me,
To gaze on Thee with endless love;
Yes, thus I hope, thus shall it be:
For how can He deny me Heaven,
Who here on earth Himself hath given?

I use that one a few times a year.

I am very slow in introducing new stuff. On the balance between fresh and familiar, I am mostly on the familiar end, using around 120 hymns (excluding Christmas).

I heard our bell system play “O Lord I am Not Worthy” this month. That is one that has dropped out of the seasonal missal we use. 🤷 I use it every now and then anyway.

We are slow in introducing new stuff, too. I think part of the reason is because a lot of the stuff in OCP’s missals is not good. I would love to do certain hymns, but they take so many good things out of the missals each year.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Lent starts next Wednesday! Do any of you have anything planned, or do you have any ideas on what you might do during the Lenten season?

@CatholicZ09:

If you are a musician asking this question: I’ll suggest you lurk the MusicaSacra forum. Those guys know their stuff. They read the GIRM daily, and Lent/Easter is their forte. You’ll learn when to do preludes, when not to, when to do Gloria (if at all), appropriate hymns and chants, inappropriate hymns, chants, and accompaniments, etc. Lurk it before posting, advice from experience.

If you are not a musician asking this question: I intend to quit smoking. It’s a filthy habit, and it’ll catch up to me and kill me someday. “Choose Life,” I say, while puffing away.

Time to bring out the Attende Domine and Missa De Angelis. Hymns: Forty days and forty nights, God of mercy and compassion, Lord Jesus think on me, All ye who seek a comfort sure.

Dude! I almost forgot about this one. You’ll have to check with your Diocese to make sure it’s OK for liturgical use in the US.
Since it’s America I’d think USCCB has the final say.

In addition to the traditional ones mentioned above:
Hosea
Only This I Want
Near the Cross
Lord Let Me Walk
Jesus Walked the Lonesome Valley
Were You There

At my parish? All of them except for about 2 or 3 that get recycled over and over and over.
