Hymn with supposedly problematic refrain

Maybe it used to, but the words have been changed to “Precious Body, Precious Blood, seen as bread and wine.” This correctly reflects Catholic theology. The OP is using an outdated book. This is equivalent to to someone starting a thread commenting on how the phrase “one in being with the Father” in the Creed does not accurately depict the Catholic understanding of Jesus’ relationship to the Father.
I agree. Both are okay, but one is dated.

I also think it’s possible to overthink things like this. “When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again” is in the Eucharistic Prayer AFTER the consecration. Everyone knows what is meant, and to my knowledge no one is saying that the Acclamation is heresy.
I’d say this is different. I would think ‘this bread’ means the bread of life which is Jesus, under the appearance of bread. For the cup the same. The hymn in question says ‘in’ the bread. The hymn doesn’t convey that the bread is Jesus but rather that he is in it. I’d say this is an important enough doctrine that it is best to avoid hymns that confuse doctrinal truths.

Another reason I don’t like that hymn is because my husband and I have always thought it sounds similar to the theme to “Beauty and the Beast”. The first time I heard it (years ago), I glanced at him, and he did a very naughty thing. He leaned over and sang-whispered an imitation of Angela Lansbury’s quavery voice “Beauty and the Beast…” He made me laugh (silently) in the communion line!😊 Now, I can’t hear that hymn without having to sing another song in my head or I start sniggering and pinching myself to make myself stop.😊
That’s like the song ‘Remeber Your Love’ which for its chorus seems to use the ‘Pure Imagination’ tune from ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’. Unfortunately I find they like to play it during communion which is most distracting.

It’s also like how “O Sacrament Most Holy” is so similar to “Happy Birthday.”

Ah yes, but what then to make of the traditional hymn ‘O Godhead hid, devoutly I adore Thee’, a paraphrase of St. Thomas Aquinas. which continues ‘Who truly art within the forms before me’?

Ah, I see your point now. I thought the problem was that they were referring to the Eucharist as the bread, which the Memorial Acclamation does as well. However, the problem is that they are saying Jesus is “in” the bread, rather than that the bread IS Jesus – correct?

Yes, well, some people evidently think what is described isn’t actually transubstantiation.
It doesn’t describe Transubstantion if you want to be really technical and a bit critical. But maybe they just don’t like the hymn, and find it corny or banal, and are trying to excuse their opinion with something more objective.

You must be singing out of an old book. It’s been changed to “seen as bread and wine.”
I wish it were outdated, because then hymns such as “All Creatures of our God and King” wouldn’t have all masculine pronouns scrubbed from it.

Really? It’s just Alleluia the entire time? Yuck. Which book is this?
What book ISN’T it? Every hymnal I’ve seen has done that to it. Political correctness and gender neutrality have corrupted our hymnals now. It’s the scourge of our time.

My parish uses Breaking Bread, and the "O Praise Him"s are intact. The most current version also has the corrected line in “The Supper of the Lord” that is discussed in this thread. I would be really interested to know which hymnals have removed “O Praise Him” from “All Creatures”.

I can only tell you about Gather, Journey Songs, and Ritual song. I never saw how it appears in Ritual Song. The other hymnals use “Alleluia.” I simply sing “On praise Him.”

St. Thomas gets a pass of course. I imagine his Latin was proper and it is the translation that is the issue. Also I think within is a better word than in.

Yes, that is what I see the issue as.

I agree he should get a pass, but only because it is not an issue to begin with. The preposition has the same basic meaning. If the song is heretical, then so is St. Thomas. As St. Thomas is as solid as it comes, I have not compunction about using this song.
