In the Liturgy of the Hours, does it matter if you use a hymn in the book (I have the 4-volume set) or can you use any hymn appropriate to the day or season even if it isn’t in the book?
Correct: “Alter Hymnus ad libitum”(Christe Lux is an optional compline hymn in the Liber Hymnarius I believe)
You might want to get hold of an older version of the Worship III hymnal. It has a lot of beautiful hymns that are unadulterated, meaning that the translations were not butchered. Thanks!
Tonight at Vespers, I wanted to use “Fisher of Men” (Lord, you have come to the Seashore-I know the song in the original Spanish [the song’s from Spain], Portuguese, and English) for St. Peter, but the book had something I never heard of and couldn’t find the melody it pointed out and it makes little sense (as the book says) to recite a song.
P.S. Now that I think of it, it makes no sense to be strict about which hymn is used when the concluding prayer in OT can be one at random from a list of dozens, since some texts (prayers included) can be substituted with others from the same season.
Here in the Portuguese speaking world (I’m in MA), it’s not used as much as that (at least at my parish) so not that many people are sick of it.Never cared too much for Pescador de Hombres. It is overused down here to the point that it’s pretty bad. One parish uses it every day.
