Hymns to Mary for the Month of May

About six years ago we had this hymn at our local church,our little choir of mostly elderly singing and very familiar with it 🙂 Thanks.

This was one of my grandmother’s favorites. I knew it well enough to sing along…sort of.😉
 
My granddad got this record of him in his monthly record subscription. He loved his voice.

One of my favourites is “Hail Queen of Heaven, the Ocean Star.”
 
Mine too! It’s such a powerful hymn usually sung with such steadfast trust and love 🙂
 
Here’s another that we sing in May. It fills one with national pride.

On Mother’s Day at our church parish, there is a ceremony during the processional where the children bring flowers that decorate a statue of Mary. This song is sung. It is beautiful. It always brings tears to my eyes.

A beautiful Hymn. About 20 years ago, one of our own from our parish, decided in his late 20s to leave his degree in Accounting and become a priest. At the time of his ordination, he decided he wanted to be ordained in his home parish and not the Cathedral, including his first Mass. The Bishop agreed and I met with him many times choosing music. My music ministry was honored and delighted to be part of this and I was one busy guy back then! He, a 100% Irish boy, wanted us to learn “Lady of Knock” for the Hymn to Mary during the ordination. We loved it! He is now the Bishop’s Episcopal Secretary, lives at the Cathedral, and MC at all diocesan Confirmations and events that the bishop is present at.
 
This one, for some reason, is HUGE at funerals in our archdiocese. I haven’t been to a funeral in recent memory where it was not the recessional or sung at the grave. In fact, during the prayers of the people in the OF, one priest I know sings this at the end of them before the concluding prayer. He only uses the “Hail Mary” part though, the full length of the prayer. It’s quite beautiful when sung a cappella.

The same man celebrates ad orientem so I doubt it’s a liturgical abuse though I’m not sure.
 
That is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. When and if I am ordained, I certainly want this hymn. It’s beautiful with choir and organ…breathtaking.

I hope that you do, so blessings on your possible ordination.
My wife is 100% Irish, so when and if she is ordained, we will have this hymn too! LOL!
