Another music thread.

This quote “hymns which are doctrinally sound and which amplify the awesomeness of the rite” got me to start a new thread.

Hymns with questionable, Protestant or vague lyrics should be dumped. Fidelity to Church doctrine should outweigh sentiment.

Someone mentioned the Lord Of The Dance. When I heard it, as a young Irish Catholic nerd, I always thought it sounded a bit pagan; like Krishna or Pan was the lord that that was dancing. It’s more in keeping with what a pagan god would do. It doesn’t mention Jesus by name, either. I don’t like the image of Jesus dancing: “Ha ha, I’m about to be cruelly executed, but I’ll keep on boogying!”. It’s garbage, upon reflection.

Less cheese, please! I think nice, sentimental hymns appeal to the ladies in the congregation, who tend to be in the majority, but if you want to convert sinners I think it would be better to use hymns which are doctrinally sound and which amplify the awesomeness of the rite; a propitiary sacrifice rather than a “we’re all saved now” celebration.

I Know That My Redeemer Lives * (Scott Soper version) may not be considered “traditional” but my organist at my home parish plays as a recessional on the organ with all of the stops out and it is breath-taking to say the least. (Its a great funeral/commital hymn).

These two take me right back to my Anglican roots. 😃 (I haven’t heard Holy, Holy, Holy in a Catholic Church.)
Pange Lingua is probably my favourite! Done properly on Maundy Thursday it seems to bring my soul a little closer to Jesus.

Has anyone heard that one? It’s really beautiful and my organist uses it as the Easter Sequence on Easter Sunday and I love hearing it.
