I have a non-Catholic friend who keeps on badgering me about our Blessed Mother. He keeps on harping that honoring Mary is not scriptural. I said that honoring the Blessed Mother gives even greater honor to God, her creator. He said it’s still not found in scripture. In my annoyance, I asked him to recite to me Luke 1:46 from the KJV. He granted my request.

He said aloud: “And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord…”

“Sounds like whenever we honor her, she will make it greater and direct it towards the Lord,” I replied.

I don’t know if I said the right things, but it sure made him quiet and think.
 
Don’t stop at 46, go at least to 48: “Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.”

Catholics do call her blessed; ask your friend if they follow the bible.
 
I think they believe she was blessed to be the mother of Jesus, but other than that they believe she was an ordinary woman.
 
Ask him where that Bible he keeps on quoting comes from? The Catholic Church lived the New Testament, wrote it down, protected it, and gave it to the world as a Gift. So he trust us Catholics to give him the Bible, yet he doesn’t trust us to know what’s up with Mary? Really?
 
Well it just could be he’s looking for something to argue about…I dunno.

If not, you could remind him that there are many translations of the Bible. Also that for us Catholics, the Magisterium of Church, that deliberates on the entire meaning of any Gospel teaching in question trumps any single verse interpretation. That is a wonderful benefit and resource in place so we don’t get confused with what the Lords intentions are.

The Church has made it official that the BVM to be an key intercessor that is prayed to as a ‘go between’ not worshiped.

In the same spirit you might ask the mother of your computer genus neighbor to fix your computer.

It was written that …‘From henceforth all generations shall call me blessed,’…

…in my way of thinking for those of us that believe it draws us closer to God because we are the one’s that help fulfill that prophesy every time we recite a Hail Mary.

Yes, you did say the right thing.

You see, when we defend against the false notions of the Blessed Mother, the Lord, gives us the words…we don’t have to worry about what we are going to say or how we are going to say it.

Don’t think that there isn’t power in the words that came from your mouth-for they really came from your soul-a soul in grace. The Lord gave you the words.

Don’t get angry…be at peace…your friend has only one leg of the tripod of truth. When was the last time someone tried to stand a tripod on one leg?

Continue to pray my friend. A life of prayer and a life of the spirit, nurtured by the Sacraments of Confession and Communion-and praying the Rosary everyday.

One of the CAF members has something like this as their signature: if Bathsheba, mother of King David was honored by the people, why shouldn’t we honor Mary, Mother of the King of Kings?
