I am expecting our second baby, and have been doing a lot of research on natural pain management to cope with labor. I recently came upon a program called Hypnobabies, in which you listen to tracks to essentially self-hypnotize to eliminate the pain of contractions. It is along the lines of people who need surgery or dental work but are allergic to anesthesia, and use hypnosis to get to a state of hypnotic anesthesia, a place in your subconscious where your body isn’t perceiving pain as pain. What does the church teach on hypnosis for these uses? Is it moral, is it dangerous for your soul or the soul of the child being delivered, or is it okay to use since it isn’t being used for new-age concepts? Thoughts??

the Church has no teaching on this. It is a medical decision you should talk to your doctor about.

There isn’t a moral component to this that I can see. Now, from a medical standpoint, talk to your doctor about what he thinks of this idea and method.

The moral principles would be the same as with any other medical intervention which deprives a person of the sue of reason (e.g. narcotic pain medication, laughing gas). For a serious reason it is justifiable, assuming that it is medically advisable.

I don’t think there’s a moral component in this. To be honest though, if it was my wife considering this I’d be strongly advising the pain medivation over self-hypnosis.

I went to a hypnotherapist for anxiety and sleeplessness. It worked wonders. I had weekly appointments with the therapist for about a month to discuss what was bothering me then the therapist hypnotized me and “programed” me to deal with my anxiety. I left with a CD of the session that I could listen to as needed.
