People are doing crazy things. It seems the young are more vulnerable to irrational behaviours, and why is this? I have stumbled across some videos which purport to describe how to control people via their subconscious mind in a way that they are unaware of what you are doing. Nasty stuff. I am sure the church says that engaging in hypnosis is sinful, however what if you are the innocent victim and are not aware of it happening to you? Are you a victim of covert hypnosis? Does such practice explain young people engaging in extremist and illogical behaviours, or behaviours they would not normally engage in? What to do about this. It seems some men have been studying these techniques for a long time, in the effort to use women. To combat this maybe we need to beware of confusion states…or alternatively mental abuse. Obviously if someone is adept at these techniques, they won’t tell you… and they will naturally occur where you’d least expect it!

Obviously one can say, I’ll just stick to my ‘safe’ friends and not expose myself to this. But you cannot always live in a bubble. Good luck. :bigyikes::hypno:

Hypnotism is not control of another’s mind, as though you could seize command of the body.

The subject has to be willing, and has to be a hypnotizable subject. Not everybody can be hypnotized, IMS.

Hypnosis is not sinful in itself as it is a tool use by some phycologist in treating some minor problems such as smoking. What is a sin/problem is the misuse of hypnosis for the sake of fun, or an attempt to control a person. I don’t know if the Church considers it a sin.

I’m not sure why hypnosis would be considered sinful. I’ve used it in a clinical setting (I was the patient) and I use self-hypnosis apps at home to help me relax or to sleep. I’m sure it could be abused but in all honesty I think a lot of the really wild stuff you see in videos is faked and I have been told that it’s not possible to hypnotize someone into doing something they don’t want to do. Hypnotizing is more a process of helping you to relax so that a suggestion can be planted more deeply in your mind but you remain fully aware during the process and if you want to come out of it all you have to do make that decision, and open your eyes, or sit up.

Bingo. The idea that hypnosis is mind control is nothing more than urban legend (I was going to use another term but am not sure it’s allowed here).

Although I don’t think hypnosis can cause a suggestion to be “planted more deeply in your mind,” it can help you relax. But so can a massage or a long soak in the tub, both for a lot less money. 😉

I think if you look into Catholic teaching, you will find that hypnosis is wrong. I have been to a hypnotist’s show and have seen first hand people doing things totally out of anyone’s normal character and later cannot remember what they did in front of everyone. Hypnosis does control the mind and if you look at the video links it shows you that. Even the fellow showing how to seduce, says that once in the stage of seduction the girl has no control; like the fellow who dropped down asleep in the phone booth and the people I saw on stage who were barking like dogs and doing other crazy stuff and later could not remember any of it. To deny this is to just be willfully ignorant or just not wanting to believe. its about highlighting and directing the subconscious over the conscious. I think you’ll find a psychologist says it is possible.

Have you ever been hypnotized? I have, in a clinical setting. I never lost my memory, or did anything I didn’t want to do. It doesn’t sound like you’ve done it yourself but that you’ve watched a “hypnotist” that had an entertainment show, and you’re giving more credence to what happened there then you are to people like myself who have actually had it done to them. I would suggest that anything that is done for entertaining an audience that has paid for tickets to see has a high probability of having fake things occur. Real hypnosis is rather boring and wouldn’t entertain an audience for long, and no one would be running around making chicken noises or barking like a dog.

I know you were directing this question at the OP, but I wanted to say that my experience with hypnotism was like yours. Years ago I tried hypnotism twice to help quit smoking. It didn’t work. And I did remember everything that was said - even what I was thinking.

I finally quit smoking some years later by simply making up my mind to do it, but with the “hand-holding” of a support group led by a counselor at the local health clinic.

Exactly. Hypnotism isn’t magic, it’s not occult, it’s a method for inducing a state of relaxation, but the subject remains completely conscious and in control. Some people are more susceptible than others, and it’s better for some purposes than others. I used it for anxiety issues, for which is was rather effective.

And from a clinical standpoint, my understanding is that hypnosis, meditation and prayer all have a very similar effect on brain wave patterns.

so, you have willfully had your subconscious mind manipulated? You have given over your will and self control to someone you trusted? And if it was boring, then you felt safe? would you have given over your will if you did not feel safe?

I don’t outright discount the hypnotist show when I have known the people involved both before and after. A sane person would never do the embarrassing things in front of an audience, that those people did.

Of course, if you don’t believe its possible, then you won’t ever have your guard up.

Why doesn’t everybody who thinks they ‘know’, go and find out from a psychologist or hypnotherapist about the claims of a hypnotist show.

That’s quite a post, and an incredibly judgmental one at that. You don’t give over your will or self control during hypnotherapy, which I have already stated. I did feel safe, because I chose a professional and had hypnotherapy done in a clinical setting. If I had not felt safe, I would not have done it, but any reputable hypotherapist will ensure that you do feel safe.

Please note that I am not trying to suggest you try it. Conversely, I don’t appreciate your judgmental attitude about the fact that I have.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

This is not about what you appreciate. Really this post has nothing to do with what you appreciate. I’m afraid there are much more important things. I am simply stating facts about your situation and I have more information if you would like to be informed, if you can tolerate a different point of view. No point celebrating a closed mind!

Prayer through the intercession of St. Faustina

O Jesus, You inspired Saint Faustina with profound veneration for Your boundless Mercy. Grant me through her intercession, if it be Your holy will, the grace for which I fervently pray. My sins render me unworthy of Your Mercy, but be mindful of Saint Faustina’s spirit of sacrifice and self-denial, and reward her virtue by granting the petition which, with childlike confidence, I present to You through her intercession.

Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory be…

St. Faustina, pray for us!

I finally noticed this was posted in Prayer Intentions. Tho the OP didn’t mention a prayer request. So I’ll bow out & pray for his/her welfare.

You’re not stating facts about my situation because you know nothing about my situation. You are, however, judging my situation, and that’s neither charitable nor any of your business. You are disseminating false information about a safe and, for many people, helpful procedure. And I’m not the one here with a closed mind.
