In the year 2015 Scientists and Philosophers both agree that it is virtually certain that if Capitalism continues the human race will become extinct in 50 years.

We either abandon capitalism as an economic model, or continue to be capitalists and watch our miserable race die out.

All the countries of the world deicide that the decision should not be in the hands of any one individual, and that therefore a voting ballet should be held.

What will you vote for and what is your philosophical reasons for doing so?

I’m not sure how to answer this question -

I have strong reasons (that I believe are well-supported) to believe that capitalism, as I understand it, is by far the most conducive to human freedom and prosperity.

Therefore, unless these philosophers have compelling reasons for me to change my mind then I would “stick with it until the bitter end.”

I think that for most of us in America, we don’t see the distinction between obviously true economic principles such as supply and demand, and “Capitalism”. In other words, we consider “Capitalism” to simply be free market economics, the only alternative of which is some form of socialism, either partial or in full.

I admit that I count myself among those that aren’t adundantly aware of further distinction.

Thus, if it is between Capitalism and Socialism, I think many of us would say Capitalism to the bitter end. If there are other options you wish to propose, please do, but also please explain how any non-Socialist option would be distinct from what we know as Capitalism.

Abandon capitalism and wage global war against all known capitalists. Use of force would be acceptable.

After all, capitalism is all about dollars and cents. It’s not more important than humanity.

Capitalism is nothing but theft and usury. Famine, destruction of the environment, cultural degeneration, are all largely due to capitalism. Capitalism, and it accompanying wide variances in wealth, are evil.

Wow, talk about a loaded and confusing question. You are saying that in 3 years, a group of scientists and philosophers will say that humanity has 50 years left? So a study that hasn’t been done by a group that doesn’t exist will say with absolute certainty that capitalism will make the human race extinct? I know you’re being hypothetical, but the way you phrase the question is very one-sided and puts anyone in favor of the capitalist system automatically on the defensive since we would have to argue against something that you’ve already deamed an absolute truth. And you don’t provide an alternative. What would I be vote for to replace capitalism? Communism? Anarchy? A random number generator?

And don’t get me started about the idea that we put this to a vote because that implies that I have some degree of personal and economic freedom that is usually found in capitalist democracies.

🤷🤷:confused::confused:

Eh-heh. :-/

You lost me at “our miserable race.” I’ve been seeing many CAF thread topics laden with misanthropy lately. Or at least that is what such sentiment seems like to me.

Funny. I know personally many wealthy capitalists who have done exactly the opposite as what is contended above.

How much money are Bill and Melinda Gates giving away?

The thing that most fundamentally sets life aside from inanimate matter is freedom to will. Capitalism allows that for the masses, socialism does not, nor does any form of tyranny.

The issue is less the fault of capitalism per se, and more the fault of (individual) people. It is difficult for people to take a long-term time horizon because of our limited lifespan. We do need to accommodate for this short-coming in some governmental way and make certain that we are clear on way we have to make some of the decisions we do.

Without capitalism, the pace of innovation will be slowed, and the necessary solutions to the impending problems we have will not materialize.

The OP clearly states that it is virtually certain the human race will be instinct in 50 years because of capitalism.

Now, I know you are in love with capitalism. You are a fan-boy. But you should assume for the sake of the hypothetical that what I am saying is true.

Here’s where you are going wrong prayharder. This is a “hypothetical thread”. I am not trying to prove that Capitalism is going to kill us in 50 years. I am asking what would you do if that was in fact true.

There is no point getting upset.

Capitalism today is not working. Not in a Christian way, it lends itself to the few, right now ignoring the masses. The culture today ignores Christian values, the family is basically destroyed, look what is happening, theres a law that says you HAVE to buy insurance etc. One indicator that is used in this economy is the GDP. which is a formula to extinction (probably the 50 year thing brought up) GDP says produce and consume all our natural resoucers for the profit of a few. The CCC talks about social and economic justice. There is a better way, I don’t what it is, but the way it is now is not working.

Well, a free (market) economy is good, but in order to be truly free it needs some limits (i.e regulations). Therefore capitalism, a free market economy without limits, isn’t good. This is why I am for a social market economy. It is largely based off of Christian principles in its form now because it is advocated mainly by Christian Democratic parties, which are heavily influenced by Catholicism. Plus, it works. 🙂

Well who would choose destruction the obvious answer is abandon it - in your scenario - to not would be insane.

Any situation where one human beings has more than enough, and another does not have enough, is evil. Any situation where a person claims ‘ownership’ of land or resources, at the exclusion of others is evil.

Says you.

Or are you adding another hypothetical twist to the current equation.

Those who have worked hard and invested time, sweat, and resources into something should have more to show for their efforts than someone who chooses to put minimum effort into something.

My son read, studied, attended classes, did homework, and earned an A. A classmate slept in, read the Cliff Notes instead of the book, skipped most homework, partied, and failed the class.

All that was required to stay enrolled was a C. So my son “had more than enough”. Should he offer some of his points earned to the failing student to bring her grade to a C so she can stay enrolled?
