I was driving along in my car,
other cars were parked on the road - right side and left -
night - cars approaching - etc - only doing 25 mph or so -
and a young girl stepped out in front of me -
from out of the parked cars -
there was a crosswalk -

she had earplugs inserted - and had a lost expression on her face -
deer in the headlights look -
slammed on the brakes hard - came, not instantly, to a complete stop.
She continued on her way - I said the F word out loud at her.

It really shook me up.
This was two days ago. Still rattled. Jarred.
I thought of how some people throw themselves in front of cars - for money -
and - yet - maybe angelic help was shown - in this situation
I stopped only about 10 feet away from her.

Anybody else - has this happened to.

May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be well. May you be peaceful and at ease. May you be happy.

It’s happened to me. I have to drive to work often when it’s dark. And if someone is out walking with dark clothes on, they are invisible. Wear a reflective vest - they are not that expensive and can save a life.

One thing that also registered with me, afterwards,
How truly bad it is - to ever drive - buzzed on booze.
I never liked driving when it snows…
but that must be like driving intoxicated.

I think it says more about how crazy the culture has gotten about shutting the world out audibly. It’s a bit crazy to me.

I’ve also noticed people that are so thoughtless when they cross the road. But I do live a stone’s throw from a large state university.

I’m surprised one person on foot or bike is not involved in a serious accident daily in my city.

Come on you two 😛 this thread isn’t supposed to be about cakes and friendly exchanging !

This. A billion times.

When given the choice between getting home in one piece or having a meeting with a three thousand pound hunk of steel moving at any rate of speed, I tend to choose the home in one piece.

No idea why people aren’t more cognizant of the fact that a car can kill you.

A lot of people are glued to their electronic devices. They have absolutely no clue what’s going on around them and they’re a menace.

True. Most of the people I see that cause slamming of brakes around here have their heads in the clouds, though, or dart out between cars into the road like you have X-ray vision. They think you’re supposed to be able to stop on a dime.

Sometimes I also think they know if you hit them, it’s your fault. No one wins in that - mostly due to sheer physics.

Edited because I accidentally hit save when I was editing before initially posting. TGIF.

I almost hit an Amish girl once. She was probably in her teens. It was in the country but on a road that got a decent amount of traffic, and she was crossing in a really dangerous blind spot just past the top of the hill (so I didn’t see her until I was at the top). I slammed the brakes and missed her. I don’t think she knew how close it was - she just smiled and waved and kept walking.

The only explanation I have is that, even surrounded by “the English,” cars weren’t on her radar, so to speak.

One thing I teach my boys is to be as visible as possible to traffic. Walking to school is common here and I definitely want them to not learn the hard way that cars win vs. people.

Somehow I feel more for the Amish kid than a grown “Englisher” who likely has their own license and probably a better idea of what cars actually do. I bet you’re right in that she just wasn’t giving cars a thought, or didn’t realize what a blind spot that place is.

I still think there’s something to be said for Darwin’s theory of natural selection.

This thread got me thinking about Guardian Angels because there are lots of GA stories associated with cars.

Even Mother Angelica had an interesting Guardian Angel Story to tell about being saved in some supernatural way as a small child from an oncoming vehicle.

I can’t say I have any sense of mine, but I have heard people tell some interesting stories.
