I always get a little uptight at the thought of attending a non-Catholic funeral.

I don’t like attending any funeral. I’ve never been to a non-Catholic service let alone a funeral. I don’t know how I’d react, frankly I don’t want to know.

don’t get uptight.

you can’t help but have mercy on those families that don’t know the faith. and for those with no faith whatsoever, well i never understood how they made it through life when tragedy hit. i went to one (actually a viewing, no funeral at all) where my friend was just stretched out on a stainless steel table/gurney. they couldn’t even put a blanket under him! i remember thinking, poor soul, you were never taught the things you should have been taught. he was a huge sinner that most Christians would condemn to hell, but i remember his kindness amongst all his faults. to this day i still pray for his soul that he may make his way to Christ.

be glad you are there to pray for them. your presence and prayers are needed all the more.

I’ve been to all kinds of funerals and I’ve never been uptight at any of them. I find funerals far more comfortable to attend than weddings for some reason. As for the services themselves, I’ve not found them to differ all that much to be honest about it.

I’ve attended several and there is nothing to be uptight about – other than that it’s a funeral, which few people like to attend.

I’ve most often attended ones in the United Church of Canada. There’s scripture, a homily, intercessions, a eulogy or two. Nothing to make a Catholic uncomfortable.

Anglican ones are probably closer to our “Funeral Liturgy Without Mass”, something which, due to the lack of priests, we have in my diocese more often than we’d like. Actually, just this past Thursday a Catholic family requested a ‘Funeral without Mass’ even though we have a priest.

Am I the only Catholic here who feels this way?
Do any non-Catholics here, feel the same about attending a Catholic funeral?

uptight at a non-Catholic funeral? goodness, i get uptight if i for family reasons have to attend a non-Catholic service of any type. 😃 yeah id have to agree with you. peace to you.

The Christian memorial I attended with my wife once was just that, no prayers for the dead, no hope for eternity nor any reference to the resurrection, very cold and strange for us.
:(:(:(😦

Why should you get uptight? The funeral, and your attendance, is for the comfort of the deceased person’s family and friends. You’re doing a kind thing for them by being there. Isn’t that what God would want you to do?

i dont know honestly. but even before the mass became part of my life, after i had chosen to persue Catholocism, it just hasnt been the same. im not protestant bashing. the service just seems so shallow. 🤷 and yes i agree with you, it is a kind thing. also a kind thing when one of my children has an event so i go. and i put my best foot forward. no biggee. it just is. peace to you.🙂

hi. what denomination was this. all the protestants i know do have a hope for eternity and the ressurection. just like us. that must have been a sad service.peace

Having never been to a Catholic funeral…I’d say, this has not a problem for me. 😃

i should not have written “most Christians”… what i meant to say was many.

peace.

its ok jen fla. i think we got what you meant. and you do a kindness by praying for your friend. God bless you for that. also you may want to look up the Jewish fable about the Holy Miser. its about this mean miser, who every one was judging as uncharitable, but in reality, that was just a front. he was actually sending money to all the poor for their needs on a monthly basis. God being rich in mercy, knows whats in a persons heart, and sees more than we can. Peace to you. 🙂

I have been to a lot of funerals. None of them Catholic, personally I do not care. If it’s a funeral, it’s a funeral. The majority of them relatives, and each one, I just had the same feeling. They lived their lives, I will live mine.

Religious funerals are not a practice of my family. We have secular ones. I intend to do the same, though hopefully with the guidance of a Bhikkhu. (Monk)

I like Catholicism. I would probably like Catholic funerals rites.

Non-catholic funerals are so drab and lame. The best part comes when the local Freemasons are there and recite their mumbo-jumbo over the deceased - there is never a word about God or a personal Savior in Jesus Christ. I don’t even know why protestants have wakes.

i have been to the buddhist temple here in oahu. absolutly wonderful. since im military, the lady gave me free food to feed the coy, and i almost got a bird to eat out of my hand. the temple is also set up in the cemetery, they have a Catholic section with a small Chaple and a Buddhist section with the temple. very peaceful. i think there is a third faith represented but i cant remember it right now. its known as the valley of the temples cemetery. peace:)

Really? Yeah, Hawaii has a higher percentage of Buddhists. What tradition was the temple? Zen?

Either way, I think it’s awesome that you, a Catholic, would take out the time to see how others live their faith. (For the record, I’ve been to many masses)

It’s always rather strange for me to attend a non-Catholic funeral. Course, just attending anything non-Catholic for church is weird to me. shrugs

i dont know if it was zen or not. you can look this up on the web im sure and you could tell me. look up valley of the temples on google. its a huge tourist attraction. did a term paper on Buddhism in high school, many years ago. got an A. also have the “Buddhist Bible” and some other books on this subject. also love studying Judaism and Kabbalah"not the new agey kind". Catholocism also has its own meditation traditions. had to put the Buddhist bible down for awhile tho… when i really started to get what he was saying it started to really blow my mind! Peace:)
