I am 39 and was just baptised 2 years ago. I am married to a catholic however we were married in the civil court. We have 2 daughters that have been baptised, done their communion and confirmation. They done all of this in Mexico as my husband is Mexican.

My questions is that I want to also do my communion and confirmation but am running into trouble. I seem to get a different answer of comment wherever I go. In Mexico the Father told me that I would have to study and take all of the exams for cathecism and would need to be married before the church. HOwever because of my age it would be difficult.
I know it may seem strange that I was never baptised but my parents just never done it. I guess you could say they were belivers but did not necessarily belong to a church. HOwever when I met my husband and him being Mexican it was so that our children be brought up catholic. We have been togher for 18 years. And like I say I was only baptised 2 years ago.

Just wanting some information as to what my next step is to do to be able to do communion and confirmation.

You need to make an appointment with your local Catholic priest and discuss the entire situation with him. He will guide you.

As far as I know, this is right. If you are in the US, you will probably be asked to go through RCIA, so that you know everything you need to know before you are confirmed.

So your next step is to learn what you need to know. RCIA usually starts in September or October, and you get confirmed on Easter. If you don’t want to wait until next year, ask for private instruction.

When you receive the Eucharist, you are (among other things) publicly agreeing with what the Church teaches - so you need to know what she teaches!

You would also need to have your marriage convalidated (be married in the church). My DH and I did it one day after daily Mass. You will probably have some very short version of Marriage Prep.

The reason for this is that for a Catholic (your husband) to marry outside the Church, he needs a special dispensation from his Bishop. Since he apparently didn’t get that, you two aren’t married in the eyes of the Church.

Now - go talk to your parish priest!

God bless you,

Ruthie
