First, only one of the prisoners gets to escape the prison, the other just dies. Second, the prisoner you’re going to kill doesn’t get the chance to agree to anything. Third, the imprisonment is only for nine months, during which time the prisoner you’re going to kill would have spend reading up and training to, say, get his college degree, whereas the prisoner who was going to escape was allowed to continue with her life mostly as normal.I can’t imagine a real situation such as this, but if the two prisoners agreed, then yes, I think I would help them to escape.
This isn’t a reply, it’s merely repetition of what you said before without even altering it to address my objection.Women will continue to abort fetuses.
Then volition isn’t even involved and this has nothing to do with the example. Most of these happen automatically, and often without the woman even knowing she was pregnant.
A, what she and I believe is immaterial in comparison to the truth. I’m not trying to assert my belief that the fetus is a child here. I’m only trying to lay the argument flat. Doing so requires assuming each side is correct for the purposes of discussion. If the fetus is a human being, it doesn’t matter what the mother thinks, as killing it would still be wrong. If the fetus is not a human, then it would be wrong to force the mother to carry it to term ever if I disagree. What if the woman doesn’t believe in your god? Can she take the morning after pill in that case? Do you force these irrational beliefs on others, even if they disagree?
sighThat is quite a different situation. Are you seriously comparing an 18 year old adult to a clump of cells which might can’t see, hear, feel or think?
A, once again, you’re parallel arguing. Whether that “clump of cells” is or is not as important to protect as an 18 year old is the very question at hand. When I’m giving the arguments for the pro-life position, I have to assume that it is as important, and when I’m giving the arguments for the pro-choice position, I have to assume it’s not. If you don’t do that, you’re not presenting each side correctly, and the argument goes nowhere.
Once again, and I’ll bold it so it really pops out: I am not saying here that the pro-life position is correct. I am only trying to explain it to you.
Better than killing them, yes. But rape is a horrible, horrible wrong; I’m told it’s pretty much the worst thing that can happen to a woman. What makes you think the consequences are all rosy?Yes, in my line of work, I see what happens when women are forced to keep babies (usually from pressure from religious folk) to term. They keep right on drinking, and then give the baby to someone else to raise.
This seems like a good idea to you?
Ad hominem, and an appeal to emotion. How many of these ‘problem children’ have you adopted?
Strawman, and parallel arguing. A fetus is equal to 1 sperm + 1 egg. It is both. My sperm is no more precious than a woman’s egg (actually, it’s probably a lot less precious, since I never run out). And if it were possible for men to become pregnant, the argument would not change a whit.Do you insist that your sperm be cared for just as well as this clump of cells? Or is this just aimed against women?
Ad hominem, and appeal to emotion. And were that to happen, I would carry it to term.I can’t wait until they can remove the fetus and place it in your belly. That will be the only chance you have to put your money where your mouth is.
You’re welcome. If you have specific questions, I’d be happy to try to answer them for you, as long as you promise to argue in good faith and in an inquisitive, as opposed to argumentative, manner. That didn’t make sense to me, but thanks.
