@steveb

“My posts on this thread are few, starting I think on p 17. This is the 19th. post. I’ll pray for you in your journey. In this case, I think that’s much better than debate. I’ve enjoyed the repartee.”

You haven’t been debating. As a little aside note, I saw a comedy version of one of those (you know the ones!) motivational posters, which said “Prayer: How to do nothing but think you’re helping”

If God was the singularity, then God no longer exists except as part of everything and everyone.

Therefore there was no separate creation of humans, no fall from grace in the Garden, no need for worship or redemption, no need for priests and popes.

If God was the singularity, then there is no soul, no after life, just recycling of matter and energy all of which is God.
This sounds like the ‘deist’ perspective, which, to me, seems to have little utility.

[issue] I have always struggled to understand a plan under which atheists develop a social society.
[question] **In a true atheist society how is the benefit from immoral behavior countered? **

Let me elaborate a little first you should hear I am a big believer in Natural Law theory which teaches God installed right and wrong knowledge in every human soul. Second ever rational attempt I make at this understand of an Atheist society (for now let us assume these are error) concludes the Atheist would best benefit from living under a false pretense of Christian in Christian society! And that Atheist would act immoral when the logic (personal gain verses personal exposure) indicated high probabilities of success. And a Third issue as I believe you and the others have God’s law written in your soul I believe your actual base is a religious base. However any information you could provide on how to reorient this thinking is appreciated.
I will have more, but for now, a big flaw that I see is how you (inadvertantly) call Yahweh incompetant.

You see, there are people who don’t get ‘right and wrong’. Did god screw up while trying to install it? Did the install not take?

I will revisit this (interesting take on it!), but for now, give that a little thought.

Also, I think that free access to abortion for all women is the only ‘right’ action that society can take. Does that mean that the RC church is wrong? Or am I? Didn’t Yahweh install the same ‘R&W’ compass in everyone?

It’s not about doubt in general, it’s about doubting God.
Exactly, so you are unable to doubt your god hypothesis, no matter how much evidence is presented to you that conflicts with it.

Thanks for admitting it, though. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery. Quite brave of you to do it in such a public area, too.

Kudos, and good luck getting the blinders off !

This sounds like the ‘deist’ perspective, which, to me, seems to have little utility.
The only thing with less utility than believing in God is believing in a God that requires worship and sacrifice. But this is just my opinion. 😉

…according to you, but you are an infidel, and possibly guilty of apostasy - so we cant accept your judgement on this matter of faith - you don’t have the right faith.

From the point of view of he who is having the hallucination, true. However, surely you don’t mean to suggest that there is no basis for an objective standard of “the good.” If you believe there can be no objective truth, no objective good, then rational debate is an absurdity, hence, the question, why are you debating?

Humility? Vatican City is humble enough for you, then? Charity? When I was a kid, I asked a priest why they couldn’t sell the gold and art in Vatican City to feed the hungry kids in Ethiopia. I was told that they were ‘priceless holy relics’, and since I didn’t know what ‘priceless’ meant, all I could think was ‘I could get some money for that gold, I am sure.’
The vatican still has gobs of money, and still there are children starving.

Sounds like you were a very deep thinking child. I am not Roman Catholic and do not want to defend the opulence of most Bishops and other church hierarchy. I think Bishops and for that matter, Pastors in Protestant Churches, etc are often very poor role models in many respects, including material possessions.

**However, I don’t think the priest’s answer to your question precludes humility. Perhaps what he was trying to say is that some things have an intangible value as well as a material value, in fact, some things have a high tangible value because of their intangible significance. Humility is not the first thing I think of when I envision the institutional church and I don’t think as an institution it gets “off scott free” in it’s sins but I do believe humilty is possible personally. If a “relvelation” serves as such a catylist, then I would argue it is true.

Which is why I said that the statement ‘15 billion years ago’ might be meaningless.
Which is why I agreed with you. It’s like saying, “what’s North of the North Pole.” (The Wonder of the World)

Exactly, so you are unable to doubt your god hypothesis, no matter how much evidence is presented to you that conflicts with it.!
I believe it was Alfred Lord Tennyson who wrote, “There is more faith in honest doubt, than in all the worlds religions.”

Doubt is an integral part of faith. Or, to quote a pious Catholic of monumental literary proportions, Dante, in The Divine Comedy,
"…so at the foot of Truth, like shoots, our doubts, spring up; this is a natural force urging us to the top from height to height.

@Socrates4Jesus

Welcome back! I was hoping you would notice the new thread, did the last one randomly stop giving you email notifications as well? How is your project coming along?
The software development is complete and it is now in distribution as we shipped the CD-ROMs last week. Thanks for asking!

🙂

… “(A)From personal experience”

I think we have probably previously agreed at the very least that personal experience isn’t compelling evidence for anybody else besides the one who experiences it in the case of fantastic claims like the existence of God. Where we may disagree is on the validity of personal experience to the person who experiences it, if it is something extraordinary like this. …
Agreed. I find objective evidence often more compelling than subjective. 👍

I once had a conversation with a Mormon who said that he read a passage in the book of Mormon that said the book was true and he had a burning in his bosom that confirmed to him that it was indeed true. I told him i had a strong feeling as well that it was not true, and then asked him to show me some objective evidence to demonstrate the book’s validity.

What i was speaking of was not feelings, but events happening in a close proximity in time and frequency that was uncanny and could not be explained as mere coincidence. If you want me to give some specific example, i will. If you think any example i give of such personal experience will not convince you, then i agree that we should not explore this further.

…Of course everything about God has an answer. With a lack of evidence, everything about anything has an answer. Maybe Zeus is using a Yahweh puppet at the moment to amuse himself while he imposes his will. Equally unrefutable and meaningless as the existence of Yahweh himself with a lack of evidence. …
Reminds me of another conversation i had with a Mormon. I asked him if he believed if one of his three gods (the Father, or the Son, or the Holy Ghost) created the universe. He said that he did not, but believed that some ancient ancestor of theirs must have created the universe. I told him that this ancient ancestor was the God i worshipped.

😃

…Why doesn’t God communicate to you in some verifiable manner as well? Why give up on a good thing he had by writing on stone tablets himself and giving them to Moses? In fact, why didn’t he carve them directly on to the moon for all to see? Suspicious that the rules came in a form that could have been easily man made at the time, rather than on a giant 120" plasma screen hovering in the sky and powered by magic.

Why would a perfect god use such an imperfect, or downright worthless, channel of communication as personal revelation to prophets? Such a method leaves any message subject to such an incredibly large amount of ways to be changed and misinterpreted, both intentionally and unintentionally, same goes for the channel of communication used by the prophet(s) and then leaves those hearing the message trying to decide between what two or more prophets have said, with all of them lacking evidence. I see no reason why an omni-intelligent deity would do something so patently stupid.
I think the writer of Hebrews gives the best answer to your question in the introduction to the first chapter of the book:

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

I’ll respond to your the objections about the objective evidence i cited later. Good talking with you again, Phooney!

@oneGODoneCHURCH

“global warming”

There are people saying the earth isn’t warming up? Regardless, scientific theories are always falsifiable, and thus when new evidence contradicts it, then the theory has to change. It is called progress, and it’s a good thing. I’m guessing that the issue you mentioned is subject to a number of ongoing studies for (according to you) 80 years or more. You might somehow think this is a negative characteristic, a weakness, but scientific theories are untouchable except by contrary evidence and give us the most reasonable expectations about the nature of reality possible to us as finite beings with only natural senses and natural tools available to us to collect information with.

If you say you have a soul through which a divine being grants you information, then cough up some evidence for it. Anybody else could just as easily say they have an invisible, untouchable, unsmellable, silent and tasteless pirate ship in a bottle though which the Flying Spaghetti Monster reveals how he tinkers with Scientists’ measurements to keep us in the dark about reality for his own amusement.
I used the Global warming as a sample of the changing nature of science. And you are correct in saying that one can claim to have
“an invisible, untouchable, unsmellable, silent and tasteless pirate ship in a bottle though which the Flying Spaghetti Monster reveals how he tinkers.” I can not provide any physical evidence of GOD other that I see him in all of creation. In the evil or bad of the world
I see what happens when man turns from Him. In the end what matters Is that we all will perish Those of us with Faith in the Lord
have that to look forward to.

GOD Bless May you someday find more that what science can offer you.

Scott

I have demonstrated a visual hallucination. There are auditory ones, as well. In fact, there are ‘dreams’ which most of us humans have which are quite convincing auditory and visual hallucinations.
The fact that you don’t dream is simply an oddity, but as you pointed out, you do see the effects of an illusion.
You say that you see them and carry on. What if you didn’t recognize it as an hallucination? That is what my point is.
You can claim all you like that your perceptions are not ever incorrect, but I think anyone who has experience using human eyes, ears and brain will know how true this is.
I’m not making that claim. What I’m saying is that I personally do not have dreams, hallucinations, optical illusions, etc. anywhere near as much as you seem to be implying.

@ontologysue
It is truly a textbook argument from ignorance,
Ignorance has nothing to do with it, I’m suggesting the opposite, rationality, par excellance, which might require you to change your paradigm away from strict materialism. “Naive materialism” is the belief that ‘matter’ is all there is, modern science has moved beyond that assumption, it has not moved beyond rational concepts. Einstein, who was the antithesis of ignorance, said the following: “anyone seriously engaged in science becomes convinced that the laws of nature manifest the existence of a spirit vastly superior to human persons.” Scientists studying quantum particles, subatomic matter, are reaching the “rational” conclusion that the laws of nature, existence, may boil down to a universal thought, a universal wisdom, in another context, “information.” This reality is manifested in the laboratory as energy, then energy condensed, as matter. Matter cannot explain a mathematical concept, or love, beauty, purpose, intention, language or consciousness; an immaterial Mind, Intelligence can. If this paradigm is true, it is ultra-rational, the antithesis of ignorance. It does not deny or contradict the physical laws of nature, matter but simply complements the physical laws. This ultra-rational paradigm also is much more adept at understanding the mysteries of consciousness and language.
thought Stephen Pinker was more of a Psychologist and Linguist rather than a Neuroscientist? "
I haven’t read Pinker, I was quoting him from Varghese’s book. He was quoting from, “How the Mind Works,” but since I don’t have the book, I can’t verify the quote. However, in regard to what you quoted above, from his work, my gut reaction is, I have no idea what he’s calling “religious explanations.” I’m not depending on “religious explanations.” However, I’m not limiting my rational faculty to the unnatural limitations of materialism. Rationality, the ability to grasp abstract concepts, inevitably leads beyond the truths of the physical.

The Richard Dawkins quote comes from “Unweaving the Rainbow,” in context, “there doesn’t seem to be anything like syntax in non-human animals and it is hard to imagine evolutionary forerunners of it. Equally obscure is the origin of semantics, of words and their meanings.” I am no scientist and only approach this stuff as a layman, testing against my own existential experience of reality, which I confess is mystical, however by mystical I mean, rational. However, Chomsky, who evidently did profound studies of language, and others, have basically said human language built on syntactical rules, has no derivative from animal communications.

enny is a philosopher who has studied language in the context of natural selection; he sees no selective advantage.

Phooney:
Thanks for the link to the recent Hitchens debate, I will hopefully be able to listen to it at some point over the weekend, but I have my work Christmas party tomorrow so I might be feeling a bit rough :). I’m getting a bit wary about Hitchens at the moment though, I sometimes think he just likes to argue only for arguments sake, and he’s sometimes drinking vodka during debates, so not the greatest for clear thinking. I think he has a fantastically quick wit though, and he is at least entertaining to listen to.
Yes, I love to listen to Hitchens also, quite astute, agree with him totally on the Islamic terrorists but I think there’s some psychological issues going on with his anti-religious views; “Thou doth protest too much;” however, I truly respect his intellectual honesty. In the aforementioned debate both participants truly try to address and clarify arguments in terms of their rational merit, honestly conceding points when it’s called for.

Phooney:
Thanks for this clarification. But by who’s version of “morally reprehensible” and “improvement in character” and “virtuous” are you going by? The basic model of evolutionary morality I outlined above (as a poor layman) takes into account how our morality changes with time and consensus and encompasses why different cultures have developed similar, but slightly differently in terms of what they think is “virtuous” or “reprehsnsible” and all the shades in between.
Well, here again, I would say, your’re arguing like a true materialist; ie, there can be no absolutes, no truth. The concept of “virtue” the “Good” has been established by most philosophers from Plato to Aristotle through Kant’s moral imperative. I think human history demonstrates a much greater consensus on what “virtue” consists of, than not.

I’m not making that claim. What I’m saying is that I personally do not have dreams, hallucinations, optical illusions, etc. anywhere near as much as you seem to be implying.
You misunderstand. I am not trying to suggest that you are special because of these hallucinations, on the contrary, everyones brains are able to do the same thing. Another example is that, if you shake your head, the world around you remains in focus, but if you take a finger and gently push on your eyeball, your stereo vision fails, and you get doubled images. The only difference between the two kinds of movements are how your brain interprets it.

Another example is how you can see much detail in a small picture, but when you zoom in, you see that there is little detail available. This is because we don’t usually ‘see’ everything with our eyes. Our brains fill in a lot of the info needed for a visual picture.

Real enough, but still a construct of our imagination, not an observation of reality.

Didn’t Plato sleep with young boys?
Is that not something which has become ‘not virtuous’?
I don’t think there are absolutes, ontologysue. We humans try our darndest to make it so, but morals change with the times.

I would not require rigorous proof, so should not be using that phrasing. What I mean is, how do you know that one ‘yahweh experience’ is true while another ‘Allah experience’ is false?
I do not know such, nor would I suspect such.
One must be, for the doctrines are quite opposed. How would you know that islam is not the true faith…or hinduism…?
I do not and my suspicion is all of these religions are from the same source. To me that has to be true
I don’t like ‘prove’ or ‘proof’ either. There is not much proof around relating to the real world. What would you suggest to improve the clarity of the discussion in this respect?
Agnostic means that they don’t know something. Are you an agnostic with respect to leprechauns? How about the flying spaghetti monster? I am atheist with respect to those, and all gods which I have had a description for. Yahweh is a ridiculous caricature of a god, and it is quite easy to arrive at the conclusion that he is completely invented. All it took for me was a read of the bible.
some say all humans are agnostic, I find no legitimate argument against their statement, we can dwell further on this later but when I attempt to pull it all together one question is why an atheist would self proclaim, another is why he would ever spend a second of his time on any religious subject?
I am an atheist. What more do I need to say? If you don’t believe that I am an atheist, it must be because you don’t truly believe in your god. If you had real faith in your god, you would have no reason to doubt my claims.
My belief in God indicates you cannot be an atheist. This is not complex; to be an atheist you must be void of the Natural Moral Law written in the souls of men. Something neither you nor I have control of
I will try. I am just middling smart, though…if an average guy can help, I will.
thank you i appreciate any help offered

…snip…why he would ever spend a second of his time on any religious subject?
Texas Roofer;3108356:
Because with such a strong difference in our positions, there must be much to learn for one or the other.
Texas Roofer;3108356:
My belief in God indicates you cannot be an atheist.
My atheism indicates that you cannot really believe all that religion nonsense.

Unless we start believing each other about this, we might as well be talking to ourselves, right?
This is not complex; to be an atheist you must be void of the Natural Moral Law written in the souls of men. Something neither you nor I have control of thank you i appreciate any help offered
Again I ask, since my morals direct me to advocating free access to all women for abortions, and some theists believe the opposite, which of us has a defective ‘soul’? I think if Yahweh himself installed our morals, he did a shoddy job. No consistency.
