Just wanted to pop in and say that if anybody cares about the scientific point of view, feel free to ignore Jonathan’s advice about “what the bleep do we know?” This is essentially a con that plays on the confusion arising from the complexity of quantum physics.

Such underhanded tactics, truly horrible.

Also I’m gobsmacked that you can’t think of a way to disprove natural selection.

Take a population of bacteria, split it into two separate populations. Put one population in the anti-biotic environment, and leave one in the control/neutral environment. Allow them both to reproduce for many generations. Take a sample from each population and apply the same anti-biotic to each population. Which population is more resistant?

Repeat several times, and this body of data might constitute significant evidence against natural selection. Unless natural selection as a component of evolution is correct.

You seem to think you should only have to do one experiment to disprove a theory, but by that rationale there are NO scientific theories. They need to be independently confirmed.
Im sorry for not being clear. What the Bleep do we know talks about lots of different things. I was referring only to one part. Because I really cant remember the rest of the film since I saw it long ago I only remember one part, the part that relates to psychology that I pointed out in my earlier post.

Decisions within the brain are complex physiological processes which are influenced the millions of prior processes which have taken place along the same pathways, in addition to the physical environment they are now in, and the genetic processes under which the brain cells were formed. It’s just a lot more complicated than billiard balls striking each each other which is more or less along the lines of simple physics.

The problem with all these arguments is (at least) twofold:

–They are simplistic. EITHER you believe that there is “Free Will” OR you believe that we are just “Mindless Automatons.” The reality is that the brain makes decisions based on processes which we are only beginning to understand; the basis of these processes lies completely in the physical world.

—Concepts such as “Truth” or “Free Will” do not exist apart from their conceptualization as ideas. There is no Absolute Truth or Free Will floating around out there, or sitting around like the Heisman Trophy, waiting to be awarded to the deserving. I maintain that the concept of Free Will is just that, a concept. It exists only, like Transubstantiation, for example. Neither exists in real life. I think that you are alleging the existence of a creator because humans ‘think’ or have ‘free will’. Humans think because their highly developed brains, particularly the frontal lobes, which are much more highly developed than other species, do the thinking, for the most part. (Temporal lobes are involved in memory, parietal in speech, but anyway…). I maintain that virtually all of our decisions are conditioned by physical processes, including memory( which ‘animals’ also have), genetics, pharmacology (antidepressants, for ex) and a variety of physical processes which are being discovered every day, such as, recently the interaction between genes and personality, right down to the specific gene.

None of this need involve a creator.
Check out what I wrote on this post 397 I think. Free will well all I can say is thats a tough question but like you said and I said there definitely are a lot of things give the illusion of it but if you had a map of every influence an individual had then you’d probably know there next move, but I think it needs more research.

You did not prove anything. You didn’t even post a picture of the wafer you claim to worship, just an ornate gold wafer-holder.
A, look closely at the photograph again. The Host is in the center of the corona, held in place.

Would they describe the god they see as a small, round wafer?
Yes, most would.

Some have also seen this:

And others have seen this:

I thought there was a little more to your god than a light snack.
You’re right. He is known as the Bread of Life, and the Eucharist is referred to as “the source and summit of the Christian life”. (CCC 1324)

The Catechism also states: “In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking.” (CCC 1327)
You showed me a fancy, expensive-looking bit of church-kit made to hold something which you eat because you think it is god. Not the thing you think of as god. Is your god less photogenic than the monstrosity you chose to post instead?
As above, look again at the photograph.

The word monstrance comes from the Latin word monstrare, which means to expose. It is also called an ostensorium, which comes from the Latin word ostendere, meaning to show.

Sounds like you’re basically taking the “no free will” position also, just not nailing it down as firmly as 1234.
Perhaps, but I don’t even have a clear idea what it means, so that could be part of the problem. Also, you said ‘leave consciousness out of it for now’, and I think that is where this decision-making ability comes from.
I started it during college, but found it too dense for my bedtime reading at that time. 🙂 I’m afraid it’s probably boxed up right now, but maybe I can dig it up.
No worries, I don’t even know if I will be able to finish it lol. Something you said just reminded me of something he wrote…
Man, I’m on A’s side again. A, could you please say something silly again so I can get back on track? 😉
OK, I have nothing at the moment, but I will try to find something for you soon.
Well thanks for going to the extreme A, I wouldn’t expect anything else from you.
My pleasure. I think it is often instructive to carry things to their extreme edges.
If I say I am agnostic to certain things it means I give it a chance in other words to prove itself. I don’t know much about pink Unicorns but from what Ive heard the majority of people don’t believe in them or Leprechauns either but the majority does believe in Christ;
So argument from popularity works for you? I am reminded of a favorite author who wrote “If a thousand men believe something and I believe otherwise, then it’s a thousand to one that they are wrong” (R. Heinlein, I don’t remember where it was from)
Oh and about the transubstantiation. If your asking me if I believe we are eating Jesus, I say if Jesus is God and he said we are eating him then we are. Its also possible its symbolic ever think of that?
I have, but it is not considered to be symbolic by the church. Not at all. When the lab returns the test results that state the Eucharist is an ordinary cracker, the proper Catholic still maintains that it is their god’s flesh (then they eat it)

I didn’t notice the cracker in there. Sorry, the monstrousity was too noticeable, I guess.
Yes, most would.
So your god is seen most often as a cracker.
Well, at least he isn’t always invisible to the faithful.
The first is a story about miracles. The second a less-than-miraculous video which has not proved anything either.
I appreciate that they may be just illustrations of what you believe, so thanks for that clarity.

Isn’t ‘ostentorium’ the latin word root of ostentatious. I think it means flouting your wealth in front of the poor.

You misunderstand the doctrine of transubstantiation. Read up on accidents and substance.

You’re fishing awfully hard for a comment on the “monstrousity” pun, aren’t you? 😛 Please yourself, my friend.

Griping about the church’s wealth reminds me of people who were upset when Gates donated some vast sum of money to charity. I heard so many people saying “Well, he’s rich, he should have given even more!” Completely missing the point that he just gave away a fortune to help people.

I don’t know what I am missing here. If a lab returns results that your precious Eucharist is simply the same cracker it was before the priest performed the miracle (invisibly turning a cracker into an invisible piece of your god), the proper Catholic position is to accept it as their god despite the lab results ( and eat it).
Which part have I got wrong?

I think it’s funny that something which looks like that has a name so close to ‘monstrosity’. I can just hear what my sweetheart would say if I wanted to display one in our living room…“get that monstrosity out of here!” (this of course assumes that her taste in cracker-holder aesthetics is the same as mine)

The church wastes resources on gold-plating a cracker-holder while some of it’s parishoners have not enough food to eat.
I think it is appalling.
Why is it so important that Vatican City be so obviously rich? Gold and fine art everywhere while their parishoners who are barely getting by are encouraged to not focus on material wealth.
Wasn’t there just some new commandments (or venial and mortal sins) announced which made gathering wealth a sin?
Regardless, I don’t think it is right to take money from the poor to plate the church’s icons in precious metals.

You’re implying that the expected lab result assuming transubstantiation would be different from the expected lab result assuming no transubstantiation. It’s simply not falsifiable in that way. This is completely in line with the doctrine of transubstantiation, as articulated since St Augustine’s time.
Or was that Aquinas? Either way, long-standing doctrine.
Regardless, I don’t think it is right to take money from the poor to plate the church’s icons in precious metals.
Of course, by “take money from the poor” you mean, “accept willing donations”. But whatever. You think the most charitable organization in the world should be more charitable. Actually, you’re probably right! God knows we can all do better.

Referring to the Blessed Sacrament as a “cracker” is highly offensive.

That’s part of A’s schtick. He knows pefectly well that it’s offensive. It’s kind of like a toddler throwing a fit to get attention. The best thing you can do is ignore it.

I know, it’s not easy. Welcome to the thread!

If he had any genuine interest for discussion, he would be respectful. I wouldn’t waste any more time on him. Thanks for the welcome, but I won’t be staying.

definitely not its just that you forgot to paste the part right after I wrote that.

there is a book with historical evidence that goes along with it like Pilot crucifying Jesus etc. whether that truly happened I cannot prove it to you and I don’t really care to either but it holds more ground than your Unicorn and Leprechaun which everybody I know at least accepts it as a Myth.

My point being that the theory of him existing is much bigger from personal to historical. I am not saying I can prove it once again but if you were to take the story of a leprechaun and compare it to Christ, Christ has more ground to stand on thats all I said. Therefore I say the possibility is there for Jesus, why should I say there is No way he existed no way. That type of thinking means your shutting yourself down to possibilities and moving forward.

“there is a book with historical evidence that goes along with it like Pilot crucifying Jesus etc.”
What book is that, and when was it written? Does it give the date for the crucifixion?

It is not falsifiable in *any * way. That should tell you something about it.

Is there some kind of penalty suggested if you do not tithe when you can? Is there some ethical principle that says that the pope can not have a better lifestyle than the people contributing to support his church?
Referring to the Blessed Sacrament as a “cracker” is highly offensive.
It starts as a cracker, or it could. I don’t see any difference after the ritual. If round white wafer is more acceptable, then OK, but I think a cracker can be used, and it is not slight for me to call it the same thing after. I don’t see a difference just because a man in odd dress mutters a few words over it.
If there is a difference between before and after, simply show it to me.
That’s part of A’s schtick. He knows pefectly well that it’s offensive. It’s kind of like a toddler throwing a fit to get attention. The best thing you can do is ignore it.

Not just some schtick, though it kind of is that, too. I said earlier that I like to take things to their extreme edge, so let’s take the cracker there.
A ‘Ritz’ cracker.
If you were the priest, and the only thing available as a ‘eucharist’ was a box of Ritz[sup]tm[/sup] crackers, would you skip the eucharist part of the ceremony, or use the Ritz[sup]tm[/sup] crackers because it doesn’t matter what you start with?
Isn’t the manufactured round wafer with the symbols pressed in it (the standard when I went to mass) just a sign of our abundant resources? I say any old cracker will do.
Even if you don’t like me calling it a cracker after the words are muttered, it doesn’t change the fact that all I see is a Ritz[sup]tm[/sup] cracker before, and after.
If you want me to see more, put more there to see.
If he had any genuine interest for discussion, he would be respectful. I wouldn’t waste any more time on him. Thanks for the welcome, but I won’t be staying.
Bye, thanks for stopping by to criticize.

If argument from popularity doesn’t work on you, then why do you keep using it as an argument?

The existence of a teacher named Mr. J. Christ is not what is being questioned. It is the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good god who impregnates a virgin, is himself born, then arranges to have some people hang him on a stick until he pretends to die, then rises up to rule heaven.
That is what I find ridiculous.

Are you referring to this Mr. J. Christ as a regular person, or the miracle-working all-powerful god?

If argument from popularity doesn’t work on you, then why do you keep using it as an argument?
Maybe a quick learner you are not!. haha Yoda talk is what you need. Anyway I don’t know why you just posted that again when I told you already its not popularity on its own its that the FACT that there are more things going for him makes it NOT real but more possible starting with the simple part that no one believes in your Unicorns, remember that is only the start not the only reason, because you forget easily.

poor little Atheist. You just answered your own question by calling him all powerful all knowing and then you turned around and questioned his actions that is something to laugh about. And remember you cant argue that back, because if he is all knowing plus all the good stuff then you’d have to be at his level or higher to comprehend those actions. Please in advance don’t give me any comparisons unless its about an all knowing all powerful individual because it just wouldn’t be the same.😃 🙂 😃 🙂 MR. J is out of your league, even DR. J; first you need to go out there and play basketball better than DR. J or MJ after that create a Universe with stars and everything else after that rise from the dead and bring people back from the dead.

My point is not that I am saying this is true, but that you can think something is ridiculous because you don’t comprehend it when its coming from the all knowing!

remember this is not to do with my personal beliefs, I’m only poking fun at the argument

I know that Atheist only mean they don’t believe in Deities but I couldn’t help myself to say this.

Even if that is true it still sheds light into the way you think in general. It would mean atheists believed the world was flat with no if and or buts about it. They wouldn’t even dare go out to see to find out because they probably would have made up their minds there was no possible way that it wasn’t flat. I am not saying that only atheist thought it was flat, but I’m saying is Atheists wouldnt DARE to think of the possibility that they might be wrong haha. o dear the world is flat again haven’t:rolleyes: we learned anything from the past.

Guess nobody here has ever heard of the “pope” versus galileo?
If the pope is the all-knowning being linked to god itself why did he condem galileo? Throughout history the catholics have been misguided by their popes.

Look at all the wrong-doing the popes have done, and yet catholics still believe him to be linked to god, didnt know god could make so many mistakes.

It does matter:

The Matter of the Most Holy Eucharist

The bread used in the celebration of the Most Holy Eucharistic Sacrifice must be unleavened, purely of wheat, and recently made so that there is no danger of decomposition. It follows therefore that bread made from another substance, even if it is grain, or if it is mixed with another substance different from wheat to such an extent that it would not commonly be considered wheat bread, does not constitute valid matter for confecting the Sacrifice and the Eucharistic Sacrament. It is a grave abuse to introduce other substances, such as fruit or sugar or honey, into the bread for confecting the Eucharist. Hosts should obviously be made by those who are not only distinguished by their integrity, but also skilled in making them and furnished with suitable tools.

Redemptionis Sacramentum 48
