I am not looking for a god.
I have recently discovered that I have very few theists in my life. I would like to better understand what causes belief (be it belief in Yahweh, Allah or a perpetual motion machine).
I was raised as a catholic, but it never ‘took’. I compare it to *my *Santa memories. I don’t remember ever *believing * in Santa, but I do remember planning to hide my knowledge about his being a myth in order to get all the ‘Santa’ presents. To me this suggests that I did at one time believe in Santa, but learned later that it was made-up.
I don’t remember actually *believing *in Yahweh, though I think I must have at some point in my life.

Who said anything about religion? I was only talking about the existence of God. Not really a religious principle but a philosophical/rational, one.

Fishing is a good hobby to have. Nearly all of Jesus’ Apostles were fishermen. That means that there might still be some hope left for you yet! 😃

If you really want to better understand theists, you should ditch the “God = Santa” bit. That argument is so old it’s got a long white beard on it. :rolleyes:

Besides, most of us believe in “Santa” as well as God - Santa Nicolas, that is!

I suppose it’s a bit rude to query your description of yourself, but you sound more like an agnostic. Or even as someone who hasn’t yet had the opportunity/motivation to look into the issues.

“I am an atheist” is generally taken to mean “I have looked at the evidence and I have concluded that God is not real.”

Most Atheists do not want to believe in God ! Because everyone can find God when he wishes to. We have a method or system to discover and experience God and everyone can examine it - and believe me all discovered him !

BTW we believe in God and have many proofes but you believe that there is no God what proofes do u have ?

You have to answer yourself the question if there is a God ( it is absolut clear) would u accept him and woul u search for him ?

Welcome–I was a pretty serious chess player until our local club collapsed. I miss playing competitive chess (my favorite opening is the Benko) and have difficulty finding anyone who wants to play. I sometimes play a student in my office but the current generation of students seems uninterested in the game, or perhaps are too busy to put in the time to play regularly. So, I’ve given up studying the game and switched to jazz guitar as my main hobby. I hope you can find players willing to play regularly. By the way, I have never enjoyed the on-line chess opportunities. Chess was for me a social game.
 
Have you studied Genesis and seen how the events in Genesis match up to the way the Universe was formed from a scientific standpoint?

Also, have you heard of how you can harmonize the world being created in 6 “days” and how that measure of a days translates to the approximate age of the universe?

In so far as the convergence of the Big bang and Genesis, I would recommend the following books: their focus is not on the mathematical aspect of the theory of relativity but rather on its applications.

I’m sure your a nice person and welcome to the forums however you do know you joined a religious forum so like Socrates4Jesus just said, what makes you a athesit? Well if you ever do acknowledge God, remember He loves you

What would it take for you to believe? Would you rationalize a miracle to make yourself sleep better at night or would you allow the existence of God at that point? Good Luck!
