My daughter’s father and I were never married. She was baptized in the Episcopal Church. He has visitation with her every other weekend in which she attends the Episcopal Church with him. On my weekends she attends Catholic mass with me. I am currently taking RCIA classes to convert to Catholicism. Will I be able to raise my daughter Catholic?

Thanks for your comments/suggestions!

If the baptism was done with water and the words, “I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” then the baptism is valid.

I would think you would be able to raise your daughter Catholic.

You should speak with your parish priest. Usually, if both parents get along, it won’t be a problem to raise her Catholic. If her father objects, the priest may be reluctant to allow her to be confirmed until she’s able to decide for herself. This keeps your child and the Sacrament from becoming a weapon or object of control between the adults.

This more like something you and her father need to sit down and discuss as a parenting issue more so than purely a faith question.

You didn’t mention how old she is, but maybe your daughter should have a day in this if she is old enough.

Thank-you all for your answers. Yes there has already been a huge legal battle, which is now finally over. I am the primary custodial parent. Although there is no language in the decree stating religious upbringing, I beleive I am going to wait until she is a bit older to cross this bridge with her father. She is just turning 2 this month. If I do have her take her first communion in the Catholic Church and become confirmed, will she need to go to mass every Sunday? My concern is that on his weekends she will be attending Episcopal service and I’m not sure how the Catholic Church will view her attendance only every other week.

From the Church’s standpoint yes. But you need to ask the father.
