I am beyond horrified

To say this is repulsive is a drastic understatement.

I feel more sorry for them than anything else.

To me, the most concerning part (quoted from the linked article) is this…

"According to the broadcast, the special will be “an irreverent twist on the Christmas special making it unlike anything viewers have seen before.”

As for Pam Anderson playing the role…is anyone truly worthy?

Russell Peters’ is usually known for poking fun at race. (youtube.com/watch?v=kRw29WZSmZE&feature=related)

From what I’ve seen of them, I like his jokes. I haven’t found any religious jokes of his, though.

So for this Christmas programme, when I see it, I’ll call it–though probably not before someone gets past overseas copyright restrictions and uploads it unto youtube.

Me too. 😦

At some time or other, each of us is going to see the effects of our actions as they look to God.

Shame burns. 😦

It is quite irreverent. I suppose the flagrant nature of this slap against the catholic church will generate discussion and thereby publicity. It works!

I recommend ignoring this and just about anything that comes from hollywood. For example, we do not have cable tv in our house. We do not even have a tv and are doing just fine.

I admire you for not having cable. I tried that once for about a month but almost had a nervous breakdown-I missed baseball WAY too much.

Your right though-the best way to counteract it is to ignore it.

No one’s seen it yet, and no one plans to see it – so what’s the insult here?

A thing doesn’t have to be personally insulting for me to grieve the fact that it can lead humans astray. A piece that is proud of being irreverent is too proud.

A movie or sitcom often consists of lttle more than a stream of consciousness string of insults, sarcastic remarks and sexual innuendo. That passes for comedy - that’s entertainment. How far is that from what our Good God wills for us?

At what point does “irreverent” become anti-religious?

It doesn’t hurt God at all when we behave sacrilegiously - it does hurt us. It hurts humanity. God has made this whole world for us - it is a banquet of beauty, a feast for the eyes. And yet we eat out of trash cans.

See if we can gget this show banned in Canada. Earlier the CSBC banned the song Maney for Nothin because one person complained about the word “******” in the song.

Dear Sir/Madame

To the horror of Canada’s 12,000,000 Catholics the CTV has chosen to air on Dec. 1st, 2011, “A Russell Peter’s Christmas Special.”

In the program the Virgin Mary will be played by Pamela Anderson, a porn actress who appeared in various sex tapes with famous rock stars.

As a member of the Roman Catholic Church and a citizen of Canada I implore the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and telecommunications Canada) and the CBSC (Canadian Broadcasters Standards Council) to ban the airing of the upcoming program in Canada.

Allow me to point out two recent cases where the CBSC intervened recently which clearly set precedent for such a ban.

In January, 2011, the CBSC banned the song Money for Nothing by Dire Straights as it was too offensive for Canadian audiences because it contained the word “faggot”. In the context of the song it is not really used in a derogatory way, nor is the word clearly audible, however CSBC felt a ban was in order after receiving only one complaint from a listener in St. John’s Newfoundland.

In December, 2010, The CBSC banned the Canadian evangelical minister Charles McVety after an industry watchdog ruled that statements he had made about homosexuals violated its broadcasting codes.

Is it not offensive to a Catholic to see the revered mother of Jesus portrayed by a pornstar. Would not Jews be equally offended if Pamela Anderson were to make an “irreverent” film about Auschwitz? Or would African Americans not be offended by an “irreverent” film about Rosa Parks.

The following is from section 8 of the Motion Picture Code of 1930 on religion.
  1. No film or episode may throw ridicule on any religious faith.
  2. Ministers of religion in their character as ministers of religion should not be used as comic characters or as villains.
  3. Ceremonies of any definite religion should be carefully and respectfully handled.
The program that CTV plans to air this December 1st is hardly the type of program that would instill harmony in our multicultural society, rather it will foster religious hatred. If this is not an occasion were intervention is required I have to wonder what is.

I sincerely hope that the CRTC and the CSBC will take measures to ensure this program will not air on Canadian television.

Thank you,

I don’t have any problem with Pamela Anderson, per se. It is not as if we have any sinless women around to play the role of Our Lady. Our Lord struck up a conversation with a woman who’d been married 5 times, was living outside of marriage at the time, and therefore had to be out getting her water at noon instead of at the time the other women would be at the well. Besides, I can imagine the kind of gossip Our Lady had to endure when she was found pregnant before ever having lived with a lawful husband.

It is the “irreverent twist” bit that makes the skin on my neck stand up. That’s usually code for *“we’ll be banking on shock value and the possibility that our viewers may secretly hate religion to sell this one!” *It is the promise that the viewers can expect to love the offering solely because it would make every religious person they know spit bullets.

That’s a good offering to avoid. May it be a dismal ratings failure.

Two thoughts come to mind:
  1. Amusing thread title: What stage is beyond horror? Petrification? I’m thinking of something like a football field, “this line is startled, this line is scared, this line is afraid, this line is horrified, this line is terrified, this line is petrified” a scale of 1 to 10?
  2. Stop watching television – simple. We need to take back our culture by getting rid of television from our homes, teaching our children more intelligent things. Only television I put on these days is EWTN; I stopped watching television around 2006, around age 20, after I realized that, not only was it sinful, it was also stupid and not entertaining at all. I started reading books, good books, classics, and Catholic literature, and now feel estranged from my peers, as they’re talking about the latest sitcom and sports event, while my thoughts seem higher – thoughts about philosophy, nature, history, theology. “He who increases in wisdom, increases in sorrow.” I think it’s better to know about reality, though, than to fill one’s mind with television’s “junk food brain drivel”.
Protesting this event is very much like going into a sleazy bar and then complaining that they have smut decorating the walls … Television is a drug for stupid people; it’s silly to complain that it tastes bad.

This is not a sleazy bar, this is prime time television and Canada’s largest TV network, the program has received a considerable amount of promotion. Catholics have a duty to protest this blasphemy, in fact the only reason they are doing it is that they know Catholics won’t complain. The Muslims wouldn’t stand for it, the Jews wouldn’t stand for it, the homos wouldn’t stand for it but the Catholics, they won’t say boo. Why do you think Beneton just published an advertisement of the pope kissing another man? because they know they can get away with it.

We have to take back the the entertainment industry and re-Christianize it, and the internet as well. I mean that is what our duty as Catholics is.

GET ON THE BATTLEFIELD!

We are having some success.

Great article in one of Canada’s leading newspapers

life.nationalpost.com/2011/11/26/rex-murphy-what-the-tolerant-must-tolerate/

To be a serious Christian in modern Western culture is to be the favoured easy target of every progressive thinker and every half-witted comedian. It is to have your sensibilities and your deepest beliefs on perpetual call for taunts, mockery and desecration. At a time when all progressives preach full volume for inclusivity and sensitivity, for the utmost care in speech when speaking of others with differing views or hues, Christians, as Christians, are under a constant hail of abuse and disregard. There is nothing too low or too vulgar.

Several blogs have picked it up as well. Like this one
