I am going to my first tridentine mass

I am kinda nervous about it. Any advice? What will be required of me?
 
Just kneel when people kneel, stand when people stand, and sit when people sit. Traditional chapels usually offer confessions before mass. You may want to confess your sins before mass. When you receive communion you must do so kneeling and on the tongue. You don’t say “Amen” when receiving (the priest will say it for you).

It’s going to be a confusing experience. Grab a missal, but don’t worry when you lose track of what’s going on. Also, the canon is said inaudibly so don’t worry if it seems like the priest isn’t talking. You’re not going deaf.

Hi Jose,

Just wear Sunday type clothing. I would avoid jeans or casual shoes/shirts. Women would probably want to wear a skirt, but the vast majority of “Traditionalists” have the common sense not to criticize the dress of a new person, and will be welcoming and happy to see you. Many women at a Tridentine Mass cover their heads with a hat or veil.

Some communities that use the Extraordinary Form dress very formally- the guys all wear suits and ties. I would try and find out what the norm is for this community or if you can’t then err on the side of formality.
 
Hello Jose. I’m a young male myself who’s gone to a few TLMs and will serve his first, likely as torchbearer in a Missa Solemnis, on Oct 30 2011 where I live. Anything else you’d like to know?

That is a great day to have a Missa Solemnis. In the EF, the last Sunday in October is always the Feast of Christ the King.

TrueLight, I remember a while back you said you don’t like low Masses very much, compared to High Masses. What I find suprising is that I really like Low Masses, they just seem so wonderful and prayerful. I might go to one tomorrow evening!
 
Well, I don’t have too much formal clothing except for a white long sleeve buttoned shirt and some pants but I don’t have any ties or suits. I hope that’s ok.

It’s fine. In my experience, most men at Traditional Masses don’t wear suit and tie, but rather dress shirt and slacks. But ok I live in a hotter part of the USA.

You could probably pick up a tie for cheep, though I’ve personally always hated the look of a tie with no jacket- too Dilbert. Really if it’s any kind of Christian community they won’t ostracize you if you are a newcomer dressed not quite the way everyone else is. Just do your best.
 
Our monthly TLM is a low Mass and I have come to love it, but I really like the High Mass or even the Solemn High Mass. Our FSSP parish is over 120 miles away so I can be very happy with the low Mass. The FSSP parish is being “hosted” by a large OF parish but it has a large pipe organ and an excellent schola. So this is a big plus for those extra special Masses( 👍 )like Christ the King, Assumption, All Souls, and Easter.

Some day we’ll have a High Mass locally (at least thats our goal)
 
I’m in RCIA so I’m learning. What’s the difference between high and low mass? Thanks.

Yes, I had a hard time with the low mass, but I’ve gotten quite used to it. 😃

I still prefer a sung mass, but I understand now how the low mass provides a great opportunity to pray.
 
I hope you are able to go as often as you can. I know if it was closer to me, I would go much more often to the ExtraOrdinary Form Mass.

It does take a few times going to start understanding what is going on, and when to stand/sit/kneel. Its best to sit near the back, and follow the lead of the congregation.

I do have a copy of the Roman Missal 1962 by Baronius Press that has both Sunday and Daily propers etc. If you plan to attend more, its a great investment that should last a lifetime.
