I am sick and my doctor quarantined me this afternoon

On my way to work today, I had a tickle in my throat. By 11:00, I had a terrible headache, low-grade fever and was starting to sweat. I quickly realized that I was exposing my co-workers to whatever it was so I went home.

I called my doctor. He had me come in for some tests. When I arrived they put a mask on me and were in full golve/mask/gown protocol or whatever you call it around me. I got the flu test (not much fun!:(). The test involved them putting a 1 foot tube up my nose and snaking it into the back of my throat. Then saline is squirted then sucked back. All this while I have to hold my breath.

They also swabbed for strep throat.

Then the best news of all. The told me I was to quarantine myself, especially from my Mom. (Those who have been here for a while may recall that I care for my elderly mom.) The quarantine will last at least until the test results come back tomorrow. But it may be extended if they come back positive for flu. They gave me several masks to wear when my Mom and I are in the same room, but I was told not to go anywhere until they give me a green light.

Meanwhile, my Mom and I are trying to figure out how to stay away from eacjh other. She absolutely refused to permit me to stay in a hotel, so I will remain here and she will not touch anything, wash dishes or do my laundry.

Ah, such fun. :o

Your symptoms are classic flu symptoms and your doctor is doing exactly what he/she should do. You my dear about about to become a statistic. 😉

This flu needs to be taken seriously. The media is blowing it a bit out of proportion but it’s a serious illness. This flu isn’t deadly, it’s like the regular flu that people will get over and the folks who are at serious risk for complications are the elderly, kids or immunocompromised. You all know this, you hear it every year.

But what the big concern about this flu and the reason for the quarantines is the fact that no one is immune to it. WIth the regular flu, there are vaccines available or people might have acquired antibodies to it but with this flu it’s not the case. If someone is exposed to it, they will probably get sick. So here is the danger, if one person is exposed, they can easily spread it. Say the nurses and the doctors didn’t take precautions with you and then they got sick. The entire office would be at home sick and it would cripple that practice and other patients wouldn’t get seen. If a nurse in a hospital gets it but doesn’t go home and quarantine his/herself, they could spread it around the hospital and cripple the hospital staff. Why? Because like I said, no one is immune and if they are exposed they will probably get sick.

So you need to try and make sure your mom is not exposed. One reason you don’t want her sick is because two people being sick in the same house is not fun. But the bigger reason is because she is elderly and she won’t recover as easily and quickly as someone like yourself. SO, take every precaution and more to keep your mother well.

Your mom needs to take major precautions too.

Here are some things she needs to do:

She needs to wash her hand a lot!! And make sure she washes them correctly, i.e. uses soap, scrubs every where and dont’ forget between the fingers, and she should scrub for about 15 seconds. THat’s a lot longer than most people realize. If you sing Happy Birthday at normal speed two times that’s about 15 seconds.

Those alcohol hand sanitizers are great and she should get those.

She needs to keep her hands out of her mouth and eyes. You and she need to disinfect commonly used things and surfaces like door knobs, toilet handles, cabinet doors, pens, telephones, etc. Clean computer key boards, keep your toothbrush away from hers, etc.

I pray you get well soon and that your mom does not get sick. But please take this seriously. Please post later and let us know how you are.

(btw, I work in the industry so I am fully aware of the ramifications of this flu)

I just received a call from the lab. The initial strep and flu tests were negative. I just have some other respiratory bug. I feel awful, but at least I do not have anything serious.

I will still take precautions around my mom and stay home from work tomorrow.

“rpp” So glad to hear that you’re feeling a bit better, and that it’s not too serious. I know the fear. I also care for my mother (she’s 87 and has Alzheimer’s… so if a doctor quarantined me from her… I’d have to call in outside help 😦 ).

It’s a huge worry. But it sounds like you’re doing all the right things. Hope you’re back to 100% soon. God bless.

I am wondering if you could postpone your celebration of mother’s day to next sunday, when you are feeling better? I know you wanted to do something nice for your mom. :o*

rpp, I’m sorry you are still sick. Missing mass is always hard. I will pray that you feel better soon.
 
My prayers are with you and those world wide who have the flu and especially those the lord has called home due to it. My Grandparents were survivors of the killer 1918 flu virus that hit the US and Canada after WW I . My mother when we 4 kids were growing up in the early 1960’s would keep a red plastic bowl with colorox solution on the washer on the back porch, this is where we were told to put any and all plates cups and silver ware after we used it to kill any gerns on it. and tissues were to be put in a red plastic bag and then immediately wash our hands
 
hope OP is feeling better and Mom has not caught anything.

I have two uncles I never knew because they died as small children in the 1918 epidemic, as did their mother. My grandfather remarried, the sister of his wife, and they had two sons, one being my father. We never new this until just before my grandmother’s death. one of my grad school projects as an archivist in training was investigating local death and burial records from various ethnic churches, funeral homes, to compare with county and city statistics. The pattern of deaths from the epidemic, as graphed over time, is compelling, and eerily like what happened in 1968 (when I missed a semester of college because of Hong Kong Flu and its complications), and what has been predicted for the current situation. Pages and pages of burials of children and young adults. such pathos.

most of my catechists, who met yesterday, are public school teachers and though our district has not closed any buildings, while 6-8 in the Valley have closings, they tell me there is has been a high absentee rate the last couple of weeks, among students and teachers, and are doing everything possible to avoid passing infection.
 
Well, I am to sick to go to Mass today. :crying: :banghead: :imsorry: I think this is only the third time I have missed Mass since my conversion experience in 2003. Those other two times were when when I was recovering from two separate knee surgeries.:crutches: I WANT TO BE WITH OUR LORD TODAY! I have not even been able tp go to daily Mass since Wednesday and it is like a physical pain that makes being sick even worse. 😦

If you’re not contagious, try calling your parish and getting someone to make a home visit to you. And you can always watch the Mass on television.
