I cannot give you a link of the news that was in the paper today. There was a picture of our beloved Benedict with my Bishop and a priest that I know there giving him some very elite Icewine that the Pope loves to drink sometimes. The priest, Fr Stuart McDonald worked with Cardinal Ratzinger as a canon lawyer in the Vatican for a few years and was called back to the diocese because my spiritual director needed a sabbatical.

Fr Stuart’s first words when he came back was…I will never go back to Rome even if the Pope asks:eek: (this priest is a very traditional one)…so…When the next Pope was his Superior in the Congregation of the Faith and Doctrine, I said to him he may just have to eat his words…😃

Fr Stuart bought a beanie for the Pope and asked the Pope if he could have his and signed to boot. This was a tradition (of which I was not aware but John Paul 2 would not comply to this tradition) in the many years past and…Pope Benedict complied!

I am so proud to be Roman Catholic! God bless our Pope and Fr Stuart…and even our Bishop Wingle!👍

A beanie? Do you mean a tuque? 😃

John Paul II wouldn’t trade beanies? That’s strange. After all, he traded his rosaries for Bono’s sunglasses…

Well, I for one think that trading a Rosary instead of something like a beanie is a very admirable and worthwhile thing for a Pope to do … especially if said Rosary is given with the directive to actually pray it :gopray2:

There can never be too many Rosaries prayed in this world of ours.

Hi Lily,

I’m pretty sure, Shoshana meant a Bishop’s beanie…I was having fun with the tuque comment.

Regarding the Rosary, I heartily agree. Bono was raised in a mixed household (mother Protestant, father Catholic) and “never embraced a particular denomination” according to online biographies. I indeed hope that he prays the Rosary given to him by the Pope and that he deepens his faith and becomes a committed Catholic.

God bless,

Robert

I understood what she meant … still think the Rosary is a better gift 👍

though I suppose it can be safely assumed that most of our men of the cloth are already frequent prayers of the Rosary 😉

Hi LilyM…It was the Pope’s signed beanie that was given to Fr Stuart and not the bishop. The rosary was also given to Fr Stuart by the Pope and before leaving the Pope and his Bishop to talk, he received a papal blessing and kissed his papal ring…with beanie in tow! 🙂

Funnily enough I met Fr Stuart on Saturday there whilst visiting my great aunt in Niagara Falls when I was asking at St Thomas More at what time Confessions were (is it me or do churches in Canada not like to advertise things like that?)

I wish I had gone to St Thomas More for Mass on Sunday now that I know who he is. I had decided to go to Our Lady of Peace near the Falls as that was the church where my great aunt and my great-grandmother worshipped 60 years ago. What a disappointment: the sanctuary had obviously been ripped out at some point and replaced by the set for a childrens’ television programme; cloying muzak; and the usual disparagement of Big Bad Orthodoxy. I’m glad things aren’t *quite * so bad in Scotland!

When I come over again in February/March I will make a point of going to Fr Stuart’s Mass…

I think Our of Peace is still owned by the Carmelites and they tend to be quite liberal for sure.

As for Fr Stuart, well, he is VERY orthodox and young enough to boot. As I said he was a canon lawyer in Rome before being called back in Niagara Falls by this very same bishop. I haven’t yet experienced one of his masses as I do live near the lake in Port Colborne but my pastor is very orthodox also…enough to lose enough parisioners…he calls sin…sin…😃 . It was my spiritual director who was pastor at St Thomas More prior to Fr Stuart.

If I would’ve known, I would’ve asked him to get a rosary for me from our beloved Pope! 😃 . Anyway, he went to a silent retreat at Assissi after he left his Bishop and Pope…

Thank you for sharing this…and God bless!

Me too!!!👍 I wake up everyday and swell with pride that I am Catholic. I couldn’t imagine being anything else.🙂

Sounds like a priest I’d like to know. Also shows once again that B16 is much more warm and human than he’s long been painted.
BTW, I once asked the chancery the proper name of the headgear worn by a bishop, including the Bishop of Rome, and our now long-retired bishop said he called it his “beanie”, but looked it up and said it’s properly called a Zuchetto:D .

Well, thank you there, mystified! And God bless you…👍

Just an observation. While watching U-2 perform at the pre-game show for Monday Night Football in the New Orleans Superdome, I noticed Bono wearing what appeared to be a Rosary around his neck.
