I am so tired Hollywood and their AntiCatholicism

It seems like so many of the older movies had more positive portrayals of Catholicism. What changed, and why? My best guess is that Hollywood realized that the lifestyle it promoted was at odds with Catholicism and so proceeded to vilify the major opponent to its own philosophy of life, but then that would lead to the question of how Hollywood’s values changed.

The family friend was repulsed by a cursing Priest.
But are many Catholics concerned about a Roman Catholic priest who is writing curses, profanity and lewd descriptions such as is seen in Father Greeley’s novels?

My anger for antiCatholicism has gotten to the point were I am afraid of going to the movies with non-catholic Christians for fear of seeing this garbage! Am I the only one that feels this way!!! How do you guys deal with it. Advice??

God bless
All you rpoints were good. However, you want advice? Don’t support Hollywood, until it is a known worthwhile film like The Passion of the Christ. Think about it, Million Dollar Baby was known to be controversial because of the euthanasia scene. You just gave money to the creators of that garbage. Stay away and vote with your money. Maybe if enough of us did that we would make our point.

Catholocism is the last acceptable vocal bias in the media. We let them get away with this.

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has the movie Constantine on DVD or video, if you do could you do me a favor and check something out for me?

Go to the end of the move when the half breed Gabriel has Constantine on the ground and tells him that God has redeption for the murderers the --------- and the molesters. Tell me what you think she says. I cecked the subtitles and it different from what she actually says. Very interesting, it will be worth it to check it out!

Fitz,

You are so absolutely correct! We need to vote with our wallets–that’s the only language Hollywood understands.

Yes, so true. Their language is money. They want ours. They sing so we will donate to Africa. Imagine all the millionaires out peddaling at once! Meanwhile they have no clue that we have already given to many out of country mission requests at church. Oh yeah, they don’t go to church. The public is their church. Their sacrament is abortion, and don’t fool with it. Their right of passage is euthanasia. And they think that they are GODS. It is not even funny. I had even been fooled by Oprah until this past year. I used to think she believed in God until I listened more carefully. She only talks of a higher power. Many of the Hollywood elite are like that. They appeal to a higher power and they reach for the stars to be like Gods.

Peace be with you!

I saw Constantine in the theater when it came out. I thought it was pretty good, for the most part, but i didn’t like the insinuation that God and the devil made that “deal” for all the souls. Was that angel actually supposed to be Gabriel the Archangel? That’s what I thought when I saw it…another thing I didn’t like about it (the end…you know what I’m talking about if you’ve seen it).

Just remember, though, that Jesus told us all this would happen: “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.”

In Christ,

But in the movies today, the Priest is seen AS the monster!

Lord have mercy on us all!
We had the same things going on in Germany before WWII, look what happened afterwards.

Yeah I think it was supposed to be Gabriel the Archangel… And you’re right about the so-called “deal”. Although I didn’t think they really put a whole lot of emphasis on it…

I actually really liked the end!

I meant what Gabriel did at the end. I liked the sacrifice thing too, though. Plus, the Russian guy from Bad Boys 2 played the devil!

Hey all,

No it was not the Angel Gabriel, Angels were not allowed to cross over, remember.

As I said in an earlier post I wanted someone who might own the movie to check something out. I think that this thread will get lost in the shuffle so I will spoil the surprise.

When the half breed Gabriel has Constantine on the floor she tells him “God has redemption for all, even the murderers the papists and the molesters” and this is why Gabriel was angry with God, that he could even find mercy for such dispicable people.

If you check on the subtitles it says “rapists”, but as clear as a bell the verbal is “papists” check it out for yourself.

Idk. I’ve never even seen the movie, but it doesn’t make any sense why they would make an attack on Catholics in the movie and then not carry it through to the subtitles.

There are some other good Catholic movies out there. I find it really interesting that all Christian oriented movies all seem to be Catholic. The ones that I’ve seen, anyway. I thought Constantine was very good, and a few years ago, End of Days. They were not without their faults, but I still enjoyed watching them.

Also realise that it isn’t just Catholicism that is treated badly in the media. The other day I was watching The OC (we’re a bit behind, if you watch it in the US), and there was a group of Christian students who wanted to beat up Seth (one of the main characters if you don’t watch it), because he was doing scandalous things with one of the Christian’s girlfriends. It was very cringeworthy. So basically, the prejudice is often anti-Christian rather than specifically anti-Catholic. Although I do think sometimes it is pretty specifically anti-Catholic…
You know, I saw that episode (re-ran just last week) & I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty dead on. The students from Bob Jone’s University, ‘My girlfriend told me she was here visiting her grandmother when it turns out that she’s really come out here to make out with some other guy on tv on the music chanel.’ ‘–Lots of people do that.’ ‘Not where we’re from.’ ‘–Where are you from?’ ‘Bob Jones University. I got some of my boys to help me take him out. She’s not going to be allowed back in school. Not that that will matter when she’s burning in hell for her sins.’ ‘–Yeah, that’s rough.’ GREAT LINE!!! AND, let’s face it, it’s true. I don’t think this portrays Christians in a bad light (not that it’s all that positive), and, I think it’s true to form, not for a Christian, but, as a character that would respond that way in university in that situation.

Continuing on with the Anti-Catholic theme…

Saturday, while watching Animal Plantet, a show called, “Most Extreme”, episode entitled, “Batchelor Parties”, while showing the number three, Snakes, and showing a celebration in some country of the citizens putting snakes on St. Dominick’s head (as he survived miraculously a poisonous snake bite), narrated, “…Pray to St. Dominick’s statue…” GRRRRRRRR!!! What the…? Do these guys not check facts before going on? I realise that that is not their main topic, but, c’mon, now I’m questioning other things they have said.

Caddyshack – saw this on the bigscreen last week (25 year aniversary). Episcopalian or Lutheran minister saying, “There is no God” while drunk. Same guy denied the main caddy, a Catholic (which, btw, note the house decorations in the opening scene), some…thing. I don’t remember, just, “Oh, are you Catholic? Oh, I’m sorry, you can’t come.”

Lastly, “The Prophecy”…movie with Christopher Walken and the guy who played K.C. Jones in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. The later is a priest, the former, Gabriel. Gabriel kills people and starts a war with God. This is after a 23rd chapter of the book of Revelation has been found…

NEVER saw “Dogma” or “Stigmata”, though, I have seen some other bad movies where I couldn’t believe what I was watching (that numbers one with Wynona Ryder, for example…)

OOOOH!!! OOOH OOOH OOOH!! AND, even though, this may not be Hollywood, what about the Bible brought to life, as depicted by NBC. I remember in school, because I saw a clip of somebody in Leonardo Divinci boat shoes walk away from Noah’s ark in…whatever that was, a fellow student telling me, “Yeah, well, Lot & his band of merry men as well as a few others survived the flood…” in regards to what I had seen. We also thought that when Saturday Night Live parodied that by doing a story about Jesus and not really using a script and having people add libbing and the last thing one saw was Jesus & some other guy in a bedroom and Jesus lifting free weights and the other guy comes in and the other guy is like, “Oh, hey, Julio, what’s going on?” “–Oh, nothing…Just killing The Devil!” …The other girl had to explain to her mom that it really wasn’t sacreligeous, that skit.

Every now and then even Hollywood stumbles onto a pro-catholic viewpoint (even if they don’t intend it that way)
I think that is the case with the recent movie - The Island.
I think everyone should grab as many friends as possible and see this movie - twice.
Then buy the DVD when that comes out.

What’s so Catholic about it?

I don’t want to spoil the plot…it has a kind of Logan’s Run quality about it where you slowly figure out what is “really” going on.

It is a depiction of the “slippery slope” we are on concerning issues such as cloning, embryonic stem cell, eugenics, definition of “human”, the pvs state, and even surrogacy.

Bah. IF this movie is what I think it is, and it looks like it is, it’s already been done before. It’s called, “Parts, The Clonus Horror.” It was featured on MST3K.

I know… The same thing happened with “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.” I didn’t watch it, but i saw the internet trailer and it had a picture of someone, who honestly looked like a cardinal getting DRUNK!!!

Hollywood can be SOOOOO cruel.

In the case of the preist, this is only because the Pentecostals are a much smaller church than the Catholic Church, so naturally, the Church has to make a big deal about it.
The largest identifiable group of christians in America are evangelical born again christians , the catholic church is the largest unified body of christians as in a denomination.
Becasue of the fractured nature of protestantism evangelicals come from virtually thousands of denominations even if they don’t claim denom status.
But Hollywood seems to like to attack the catholic institution a lot more than the evangelical body.
The catholic church is a more attractive target I think becasue of the authority it claims for itself and its strict line on faith and morals. And we do live in America where the church is generally still viewed as mysterious and plotting and has the power to influence any number of silly conspriacy theories.
The roots of anti-catholcism in American easily rears its ugly head in celluloid where movies like to bait audiences with conspriarcy theory and your local evangelical group does not have the attractive aura or possible power to pull of a world wide scenario.
