I am still being told, here at CAF, that my understanding of sola scriptura is lacking, so I guess I am still attempting to learn.....

JL: There is no agreement among Protestant groups to ONE definition of SS, at lest in practice. The Lutheran view is far from that of the non-denomination from which I came. SS runs from an ecclesiastic group, from all the congregations of that denomination. To the local congregation, to one charmatic individual pastor, to individual interpretation. Individual interpretation would be my former denomination. SS has degenerated from the Lutheran view to a tower of babel. It had even done so in Luther’s day. If I remember correctly Luther lamented that ever milk maid has become a theologian.
What you have said certainly seems to be spot on. I think Martin Luther, if he were here today, would be terribly disappointed with the way sola scriptura is so badly abused, but that is what happens when you make the bible the final authority, as opposed to the church founded by God.

A very important point.
Note: I completely understand the difference between authoritative and infallible.

So Joe370 , **can you please provide us with a list of Scriptures that the Catholic Church has infallibly interpreted? (vs. authoritatively interrupted)

**
I am NOT asking for a complete list : there are over 8000 verses in a Bible , but can you provide a list of a dozen or so verses that the Catholic Church has infallibly interpreted?

You have stated that you left a Protestant Church due to the lack of an “infalalble interpreter”, so for what dozen or so infallibly interpreted verses did you switch?
To my understanding the interpretation of the literal sense (what the author sought to convey and how the recipients of the authors time would of understood it) of very few verses if any have ever been officially interpreted by the Church. Doctrine based on scripture is another matter. It is not uncommon to have two Catholics debate over the interpretation of a passage of scripture where one is disguising their interpretation as Church Doctrine when in reality the conflict is between two competing scholarly interpretations. It is an oversimplified view by non-Catholics to understand this process as Catholics being guided by private interpretation in relation to official doctrine(eg The doctrine that God created the world does not include how it was created ) The type of private interpretation that the Church rejects are those that go against or deny official Church pronouncements or the Creeds.

Jon, maybe I am wrong about Martin Luther and tradition, I hope. Did ML embrace tradition? Could you maybe furnish some quotes by ML embracing tradition? 🙂
Joe,
Sorry this is delayed. Try this:
“It is our confession that in the papacy there are the right Holy Scriptures, the right Baptism, the right Sacrament of the Altar, the right keys for forgiveness of sins, the right preaching office, the right catechism, such as the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, the Creed. … Now if Christianity exists under the pope, it must be Christ’s true body and members. If it is His body, then it has the right Spirit, Gospel, Creed, Baptism, Sacrament, keys, preaching office, prayer, Holy Scriptures, and everything that Christianity should have. Therefore we do not rave like the ‘enthusiasts’ that we reject everything in the papacy”
For context, here’s the article

No biggie; take your time; I know you have other things going on. 🙂

Wow, that is interesting *(Now if Christianity exists under the pope, it must be Christ’s true body and members. If it is His body…) *- but he did not mention holy tradition as he does with holy scripture. I will read the article.

Thanks Jon. 👍

The teaching office of the apostolic church founded by Jesus, and the other books of the NT agree with that. Peter said: And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things…But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
In his first letter, he said:

Clearly teachers are necessary, and said teachers belonging to the church founded by God, just as was the case in the 1st century, continue to possess the charism needed to infallibly teach, but that’s just my opinion, and Paul reminds us that we must defer to their authority:

*“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.”
*
Hence the OP, which says: I am still being told, here at CAF, that my understanding of sola scriptura is lacking, so I guess I am still attempting to learn…👍
joe370 Good post… I agree with you… To be a believer in “Scripture ALONE” you are forced to reject the scriptures!
Hebrews 13:17
Have confidence in your leaders and** submit to their authority,** because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.

Listen to the CHURCH or be treated as “Pagan”!
Pagan.. “A person OUTSIDE of the body of God!”

Well, consider this, Joe. In both his large and small catechisms,he gives commentary about the Apostle’s Creed, clearly part of Tradition. And this, on the real presence:
Who, but the devil, has granted such license of wresting the words of the holy Scripture? Who ever read in the Scriptures, that my body is the same as the sign of my body? or, that is is the same as it signifies? What language in the world ever spoke so? It is only then the devil, that imposes upon us by these fanatical men. Not one of the Fathers of the Church, though so numerous, ever spoke as the Sacramentarians: not one of them ever said, It is only bread and wine; or, the body and blood of Christ is not there present.
Surely, it is not credible, nor possible, since they often speak, and repeat their sentiments, that they should never (if they thought so) not so much as once, say, or let slip these words: It is bread only; or the body of Christ is not there, especially it being of great importance, that men should not be deceived. Certainly, in so many Fathers, and in so many writings, the negative might at least be found in one of them, had they thought the body and blood of Christ were not really present: but they are all of them unanimous.”
Jon

I believe his pen name is a reference to a verse in the bible about rightly dividing the word of God.
JL: I think you are rigtht Fbl, that begs the question, how does Rightly Dividing know when he is rightly dividing the word of God?

Is the topic now hermeneutics?
What specifically would you like to know?
