I attended one of the most beautiful masses ever today...in the Charismatic Episcopal Church

I attended a mass of the Charismatic Episcopal Church in my town. I usually attend Catholic mass with my Opus Dei wife about every fortnight. Although I love our local RC priest and consider him a friend and brother in Christ, I find the Novo Ordo RC mass not particularly inspiring.

The CEC mass is like a solemn RC mass or a high Anglican mass, complete with incense and bells. The priest has his back to the congregation for much of the service. Between the readings, the congregation responds with songs of praise. I suspect apart from the praise songs, the mass would be similar to an Anglican Use RC mass.

I have attended several charismatic Roman Catholic masses, but this was far more formal and less spontaneous.

Converts to Catholicism and already is throwing them Anglicans off the bus!

I think even more have joined the Orthodox Church, using the Western Rite, especially the Antiochian Orthodox Church, which has been especially receptive.

After attending their mass, I can understand why the RCC and the OC would be so welcoming to CEC parishes. I saw a respect for the Eucharist that I have rarely seen during a Roman Catholic mass. The priest spent about 5 minutes cleaning the chalice with the purificator.

The Little Entrance was beautiful–very solemn. Yet the myriad songs of praise gave the mass a rather joyous atmosphere. It was as if the Anglo Catholic Pusey House at Oxford celebrated a incense-fiilled high mass with Hillsong music and then John Stott arrived to give a theologically conservative, “evangelical” sermon.

I am not sure how amenable most Roman Catholics would be to the CEC mass, however. It lasted about 2 hours, most of the time with everyone standing. The sermon alone lasted about 40 minutes.

Those from an Orthodox background would probably be more used to that length of divine liturgy.

Could an Anglican Use mass be celebrated with praise music in the RCC? Would CEC parishes joining the RCC be able to celebrate “charismatic masses” weekly (using whatever rite or use) or just occasionally, as do some RCC parishes?
