There are people here who confess to be Catholic theologians, yet say everything against the theology, and behavior that is unprofessional. It really is a travesty when others are trying to learn about the faith, and a so called Catholic theologian comes in and argues with another Catholic., or says the wrong information. I never seen anything like this in my life.

LOL :rotfl:

Theologians usually aren’t very professional. There’s a great Urban Legend about St. Athanasius punching Arius in the snout at the first council of Nicea.

Have you ever read St. Cyril of Jerusalem’s works against Nestorius? They would not be allowed to be penned on CAF. St. Cyril would have been banned I am pretty sure.

When I studied theology at university I wrote a paper lamenting the divisions between today’s modern Theologians and the mystic. Where are the St. John’s of the Cross today?

Hans Urs Von Balthazar might be a good place to start 😉

Welcome to the internet.

why you laugh? :o when a catholic has triple majors in theology, a masters in divinity, and 10 years experience teaching in catholic schools…surely he must have learned how to be professional. to be mature.

or is that an Imposter? 🤷

I laugh because of the punned title of your thread - it’s hysterical. Punned? No. hrmmmmmmmmm - satirical? Maybe that’s better.

Professional conduct should be seen by educated people. But it’s not. Theologians are not an exception; they are just like everyone else.

DW works at a Catholic University. A larger bunch of bloated headed, egotistical, UN-professional people I dare you to find, and that’s just in the seminary! DW was not Catholic when she started working there and the conduct of these “theologians” was a serious stumbling block on her path to the Church (and still is).

I could cite specific examples but what would be the point? We’re all humans. Educated or not; theologians or not. We’re all messed up all the time. I think we have to try and just do better, and when we mess up. Realize it, repent, confess, do penance, and drive on to try to do better next time.

Oh a parody thread.

Great.

Thanks for the warning. That’s why I follow the teaching of the Church. 🙂

I love talking to people about God. My best friends are people that I have open and honest conversations about God with all the time.

I love theology. I am not a theologian. I did study theology for a bit, but no degree. I have had arguments and many intense conversations with theology professors. They are fun to have. If you’re going to have idea exchanges with a theologian I think you have to remember that Theology means nothing. It’s just an intellectual exercise. Unless you take that theology and use it to personally motivate you to enrich your walk with God it is completely useless, as is anything else.

Theology has become whatever people want it to be, because Christianity has become whatever people want it to be. There are all sorts of schools of theology now, because there are all sorts of ideas about God now. It’s an open market. It’s one big huge useless smelly open market. God is in this box, He is in that box, but He can never be in your box … bah

I think you have to able to discern if something is useful for you on your path. Even if it is useful but you are not in a position to hear it, then it is best left unheard. Everyone is at a different place in their walk with the Lord. Because of that they can use some things and not use others.

Not everyone can be a Theologian or an Apologist. Since we aren’t all called to be one of those things that’s perfectly a-ok. But as Christians we are all called to love God and love neighbor.

All the theology in the world doesn’t change that; proper or impostured.

I wonder about the same thing sometimes…and except for this post, I’ve spent most of my time on totally different threads than AgnosTheist.

Not conforming to Catholic doctrine is certainly a major issue. But the one I’ve seen too much of is the “unprofessional behavior” part - for example calling opponents “fundies” or “clowns”. As a Catholic it makes me very sad because people are turned off by that sort of dialog.

Heh… well, you’re right. Although saying you’ve never seen anything like this in your life suggests to me that you need to get out more. You should see academics or scientists argue! 😉

There ARE a lot of self-appointed ‘experts’ online, which is why the best way to learn is to read primary sources (Church Documents, Scripture, etc).

That being said, there ARE a lot of points where Catholics are permitted theological leeway and there can be multiple interpretations of things that the Church hasn’t definitively ruled on (yet?). Those things, well, you can expect some debate and occasional heated argument. Sadly, for a lot of folks, those discussions are occasions for sin.

**This, coming from the King of the antagonistic posters . . . **

AgnosTheist, I’m sorry that some of the replies you have received have been less than serious, but some of us just see unprofessional behavior from theologians so often we’ve come to expect it. Coming to the thread from this vantage point makes the OP seem like a delightfully humorous satire on the majority of present-day theologians.

That being said, if anyone is asserting credentials, that is actually on the list of Banned Topics:
  1. Asserting credentials as a clergyman, religious, theologian, or legal or medical professional, on which members might rely to their detriment, when the credentials cannot be verified to the satisfaction of CA staff.
If you see anyone doing this, you can certainly let the mods know.
