Hi,

I got admitted into a seminary and I’ll be going there in a few weeks. I thought I was going to be rejected so I told the guy assisting with my application something. I said that I’ll be willing to take a job some priests are rumored to be not fond of. I said I’ll accept appointment as an exorcist if ordained. Now my gut says that triggered something. A few weeks ago I had a string of nightmares that prayers from here helped with. Now I’m waking up with scratches on my face and body when I wake up sometimes. My home usually does not have ants, spiders, worms or frogs. Now a few of them get in my home every now and then. I’d like to think those are there by some natural means but I need to be on the safe side.

Short version: I need a Hail Mary or a St. Mike’s prayer for the concern above.

You might be scratching yourself during dreaming. Before anyone thinks about appointing you into any ministery , firstly you have to get through Seminary. Relax and concentrate on that.
 
It’s more likely you’re just nervous about your impending life change starting the seminary, and you’re nervous and having nightmares and scratching in your sleep.

I will say a prayer for you in any event.
 
Most often these “scratches” upon arising from bed are actually imprints of your sheets, pillows. The skin retains the imprint. Staying hydrated will help the skin, making your bed so you get in flat sheets covers at night is also a way to lessen these marks.
 
This reminds me, I get scratch-like marks from things I’m allergic to depending on the points of contact, ie if they just lay across my skin. Folds in sheets would do it.

Blades of Bermuda grass leave imprints that look like an army of kittens descended on me.

Op: Try by Hypoallergenic detergent and Hypoallergenic or skip the dryer sheets, give an extra rinse in the wash before throwing in the dryer.

It sounds like maybe “someone” does not want you to become an exorcist; which might imply that you will be a great one.

He often bothers the holiest. He would try to disturb Holy Mother Saint Teresa of Jesus’ sleep by banging stuff around in her cell at night. She would awaken, open one eye, and say “oh, it’s you again…” and go back to sleep.

Seems weird to me that folks always want to affirm the reality of things like angels, Saints and Heaven but constantly downplay the opposite reality of demons and hell. I certainly hope it’s nothing my brother but I’ll pray for you nonetheless, because it seems to be completely legitimate to assume that someone who may be willing to become an exorcist would be attacked.

For the same reason that it’s more likely that my good feeling when something good happens to me is due to natural causes, rather than angels giving me a heavenly mood boost.

Not really. Someone posting on here, “I had wonderful dreams three nights in a row, they must have been sent by an angel” would likely receive an answer such as “That’s nice that you had good dreams, but they’re probably just a natural phenomenon, you were feeling good about the nice day you had with your family,” etc. Likewise, someone posting, “I had nightmares three nights in a row, it must be a demon!” will probably be met with, “Dreams are just dreams. Are you worried about something, or could it be something you ate?”

The supernatural is real, but one must not over-attribute natural phenomena to it and start seeing angels or demons under every bush. The devil is always present, but he usually works by tempting us to sin when we’re awake, not by attacking us in our sleep. The rarity of this is why exorcists do a lot of tests to make sure that an actual demon is involved before they exorcise someone; otherwise they’d be doing exorcisms on everybody who walks in the door.

One other issue is that if one becomes overly focused on thinking about the devil and demons, then that can actually open doors to them being more present in our lives. It’s not dangerous to focus all day on angels and saints because them being present in our lives is a good thing. But one doesn’t want to encourage demons. One way of fighting the devil is to put him out of your mind and think about good, Godly things. You can’t do that if you’re worrying about attacks all the time.

I am also sure when this young man gets to seminary, they will teach him all about this better than you or I could.
 
I liked the meaning of the name of the Uriel but sadly his status as an archangel recognized by the RC Church is in the air I think. I remember it meant God’s fire. That sounded nice. I think I should go with Raphael since I asked for his intercession when I had a deadly sickness when I was a kid. My Coming Home network account has Raphael instead of Uriel.

Uriel is actually venerated in the Eastern Catholic Church. His cult was only suppressed in the Latin Catholic Church, back in 745.

Technically we are supposed to venerate as Catholic saints all saints of the Eastern Catholic Church, so that includes Uriel.

In the 1500s, the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome (the one designed by Michelangelo and built on the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian) was said to be inspired by a vision of Uriel reported to Pope Pius IV by a Sicilian friar.

Not really.

It’s just common sense to rule out natural causes before attributing everything strange to the supernatural.

This is why the Church recommends people see a doctor or psychiatrist before seeing an exorcist.

I’m interested in hearing more about your experience, if you’re comfortable sharing. Did you have a specific prayer you used?

I have offered prayers on your behalf. It’s awesome that you’re willing to go where the Church leads you–so much time and experience will pass during your educational years. You might be exposed to something that was never on your radar and realise ‘this. This is what I’m called to do’. May God light your path, today and always.
