I confess that I wore jeans to Easter Mass. I had on a collared shirt, but it wasn’t a buttoned-down shirt, either. Everybody else was in their Sunday best. Felt a little bad and out of place. Oh well.

So, you were at Mass. Worshipping & praising Jesus. No judging here.👍

CradleCatholic5, to quote my all time favorite movie, “This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!”

I agree with you again 200 percent. As long as you go, and pay attention, (No sleeping or playing game boy) your fine.

I usually go in blue jeans and a rock and roll t-shirt ;)!

You are never out of place in the presence of the Lord! Jeans or no jeans. If something between you and God is telling you that you might show him more honor by dressing up, then by all means go ahead and dress up in the future. But do not beat yourself up over jeans! It is sort of like how some women like to cover their heads in church. If God is calling them to do that, what an awesome way to honor Him. But if we spend the entire time thinking about how holy and obedient we are for covering our head, it sort of defeats the point. God doesn’t want our fancy garments to be a distraction from him, or feeling lesser because we are not dressed up to be a distraction either.

Rascalking~WHERE have I heard that movie quote before??? It sounds so familiar!! :hmmm:

I confess that I wore jeans to Easter Mass. I.
if you were in Texas you would have had lots of company, jeans are dress clothes down here. I hope you took off your stetson before you came into church

Ok… I have read many posts on this subject and it is one of my little pet peeves.

True, Jesus will accept you just the way your are… But does He want you to remain, “Just the way you are” ???

Dress in proper attire shows respect. Respect for our God, for the One who died for our sins… Jesus is in the Sacrament…

If you were invited to the White House for dinner, would you wear jeans?
If you were invited to dine with the Holy Father in the Vatican, would you wear jeans.

You have been invited to dine with our Lord… Why wear jeans??

Yes, if jeans are all you have or the best you have then wear jeans… However most American men own a coat, tie and dress pants. Most American women own a dress, or skirt and blouse, or maybe dress pants…

Jeans and / or shorts and not a sign of respect.

It’s great you were at Mass, and I hope you continue to attend! (Me, I love going; Sunday morning is the highlight of my week.)

If you don’t mind, I have a question:

Did you feel uncomfortable because others were dressed better than you, or because you felt under-dressed in the presence of Jesus?

The movie Casablanca. It is, by far, my favorite movie of all time.
I KNEW it sounded familiar! Thanks!

To OP: At least you went to Mass! 👍

I’d feel underdressed if I wore jeans. I usually wear a skirt or a nice pair of slacks though (interestingly enough) I walk to and from church so just when I’m walking up towards the building I’m wearing skirt, top, socks and sneakers. 😛 Right before I enter I change my shoes into the dressier ones I’ve brought. I’d only wear jeans and a t-shirt if the weather was kinda crummy (i.e. raining). 🙂

I grew up in a family that was on the pious end of the spectrum. My dad ALWAYS wore jeans. In fact, they were always really old and he patched and repatched them himself. This was, I don’t know, some sort of act of deprivation that he did or something. So, he wore his crummy jeans to mass with a dress shirt. And he received the Eucharist on his knees and wore a scapular and went to confession every week before attending mass. 😉

I try to dress at least as nicely as I would for work because I consider mass far more important but that is just me. I’ve seen lots of working class people who probably don’t own a suit who look like they choose their clean, pressed jeans, polished boots and pressed dress shirt with care for mass. I think they are treating mass like a “special occasion” and trying to honor the presence of Our Lord by that attire also. Everyone approaches their worship a little differently, so I hope people would be clean and reasonably covered to preserve modesty and not distract.

I agree. Just put some thought into what you are wearing before you walk out the door, and make sure its modest in nature.

I agree with you Will. Personally I HATE wearing a tie, but I will always wear one (even on the hottest days) to show my respect, and to indicate to God that I recognize that Sunday Mass is the most important event/occasion I could attend. Here in Canada, I’m sure that there are many men who feel uncomfortable attending the Governor General’s Dinner in a tux, but they wear one out of respect anyway. I do the same at Mass. I try not to judge others, (it’s hard sometimes), but I do wish that collectively, when we all all go to Sunday Mass, outsiders could say: “Look how respectful those Catholics are when going to church.”.

a man who wears jeans here is often wearing his best, showing the ultimate in respect. they are always new, or laundered and pressed, dark wash, with a belt and buckle, and freshly shined boots, white shirt starched and pressed, string tie with clasp that matches the belt, stetson always removed before entering church, or to salute ladies. Several of our RCIA candidates dressed this way in what is clearly the best they own. My guess is that to keep one outfit for “good” represents a real sacrifice for someone scraping a living as a ranch or farm hand, so don’t knock it.

went to pick up my clothes at the dry cleaner, and fully half the clothing waiting to be picked up are jeans, where else do people dry clean and press their jeans?

we also have our share of teens who schlump around in raggedy dirty jeans with immodest tops, so if their parents can’t make them dress right, either can I. since said tops carry logos of expensive stores, I don’t think poverty is an issue in their cases.
