I confess that I had meat on Friday for the first time in a few years. The BBQ ribs were just too much to resist. Then I had wings for dinner, because I thought since I already broke it, I might as well, right? Oh well. Now the Catholic guilt is setting in.

why. this is not a sin. there is no prohibition against eating meat on Friday outside of Lent. Why not focus on training your conscience so that guilt sets in when it should, for real sin, so it does not become dull.

You’re supposed to do some penance on Friday. Abstinence from meat is one common form (mandated in Lent, but in the USA not required outside of Lent). However, if you do eat meat on Fridays outside of Lent then you need to do an alternate penance. Say a Rosary or something like that.

Canon 1251 – Abstinence from eating meat or another food according to the prescriptions of the conference of bishops is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities; abstinence and fast are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on the Friday of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Yes, in the US it has become less common to not eat meat on Fridays; however, it is still law and if you do eat meat, you are supposed to offer another penance, ie, extra prayers or the rosary as someone mentioned.

Last Friday, I had to attend a work function that offered barbecue, so I knew that I would eat meat. I said the Liturgy of the Hours which I don’t normally say and offered it up as my sacrifice instead of not eating meat.
