I honestly not a bible expert nor very righteous and holy. I’m just a normal sinful human being who believes in God. Until I saw this group in Facebook, a debate between INC/COC (Iglesia Ni Cristo or Church Of Christ).

The posts really made me shiver. They are all saying hurtful words toward each others religion.

I can not take it, I speak to them in a very Christian way, mannerful and bible-based. I hate it when they speak towards my religion like trash. And also, I’m very dissapointed with our fellow Catholics who disrespects their beliefs, and cusses to them back-and-forth.

I know I’m a human. I’m not a prophet. But, did I do something wrong? Is this a sin?

There’s nothing sinful about respectful debate

Yes, and what made me do action are the inappropiate and very sinful thinking and words they are spreading. These two religions are under Christiany and it is dissapointing that two Christian communities fight against each other.

There’s no sin in defending the faith without malice. You might even lead someone to the faith if you debate with respect. You might gain some insight as well. Who among us has not reached that moment when we realize we don’t have all the answers? I have many times. Often, daily.

I don’t get into Facebook debates. If I see something that’s really off (blatantly anti-Catholic, whether that be from a non-Catholic Christian or a secular person) I’ll send a private message. I’ve found long debates that are public (right on someone’s feed) encourage people that want nothing more than to prove the presupposition that people of faith, or one particular faith, are stupid and don’t use their intellect. Lots of people get a kick out of trying to make Catholics or other Christians look like idiots to justify their own decisions. A PM is a more tactful way to offer charitable correction and potentially open a fruitful dialogue (in my opinion).

I’m naturally someone who loves to debate, but I save it for my close friends. We play devils advocate, they challenge me, I challenge them. But we enjoy it. It can get heated, but we’re still friends after it all.

I think that people may see your kindness as a permission slip to be mean. It’s a waste of time talking to people like that.

Whether or not it is sinful for you depends upon God’s call for you.

Inserting yourself into the hateful interactions of others may not bear any good fruit.

Your efforts may be better spent praying for them, and learning about your own faith.

I’m not a prophet.
A prophet is one who speaks God’s truth into the current situation. We are all called to be prophets in this way. The question is, has God called you to be a prophet in this situation.

1 Timothy 5:22 "Do not…take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. …

You are completely right. Most of them are really stubborn. 😅 But I can’t judge them, God will do.

It sounds like you are doing what the Church teaches:
The disciple is bound by a grave obligation toward Christ, his Master, ever more fully to understand the truth received from Him, faithfully to proclaim it, and vigorously to defend it, never-be it understood-having recourse to means that are incompatible with the spirit of the Gospel. At the same time, the charity of Christ urges him to love and have prudence and patience in his dealings with those who are in error or in ignorance with regard to the faith.
Of course, there also comes a time to move on (cf. Matt. 10:14; Titus 3:10; etc.)

I don’t think so. I’m just a simple human being, and not be worthy of being one. I just feel that lots of people are taking the wrong path, thus walking towards the fire and hatred of eternity. I could at least help them hear or read the God’s truth. I’m a sinner too, and that does not makes me anything special.

It is a shame I’ve never heard or read of this. Thank you for now I know these.

Jesus said “by this will all men know you are my disciples, by how well you debate on Social Media”, right?

We are all called to be prophets because we are to be light and salt in our culture. We are here to bring God’s point of view to a world in need. This is the prophetic ministry. All the prophets were simple human beings, and all of us are unworthy of the high calling to which we have been called. We are one beggar telling another beggar where to find the bread. The question is, are these the beggars that Jesus has called you to speak to about His plan?

You’re welcome! It is the grace of the sacrament of Confirmation–which strengthens us in the Holy Spirit to publicly profess and defend the faith in word and deed–that really helps us in this regard. It’s why it is always important to pray to the Holy Spirit for wisdom and prudence when deciding when and how to defend the faith.

In this modern era, social media is one of the prominent areas where these people could gather and share their faiths. As a person of modern era this is one of the places where I can reach other people through internet and share God’s words.

And in 1st Century Palestine public debate was quite popular.

Christ, however, gave different instructions.

I think it’s ok as long as you don’t allow it to become uncharitable (which I know can be difficult). Also, know when to walk away and just pray for people.
